Please help! Need a refund on non-refundable tickets with United

So we had a family event planned for April/pesach in Israel. Due to the war, having two small kids, and most of all, the event being cancelled, I’d like to get a refund of our $9k spent on the tix. The tickets are technically non-refundable but if there’s ever a time to make an exception now should be it. I did not get a separate insurance policy.

I requested a refund and informed them of the situation but, although they did refund all the extras and options they refused to refund the bulk of the expense.

Anyone know who specifically I can talk to in an attempt to appeal this decision so I don’t have to spend 40 hours on the phone with tier one support l? If not, any ideas on what I can try?

I feel badly, but why is this the airline's fault?

Insurance is sold to cover just these sorts of occurrences.

Best bet is to hope war continues (!) and airlines continue to delay resumption of flights.

Would he be refunded if he cancelled the tickets already?
And aren't all United tickets refundable with fee?

That’s what I thought. But apparently they’re not refundable even with a fee, although we do get 12 months to use the credits.

I understand this is not the airlines fault. Not out to blame them. But I also happen to know they make exceptions under rare circumstances and was wondering if there was someone I could speak with that would have some authority in the matter over at United.

You might try different methods of reaching them, text, tweet, different centers by phone, have a 1k try for you etc. There is also very possible to be a schedule change which would allow you to cancel.

I don't know when booking online, Whenever I issue in Sabre, every United ticket since Covid is refundable with fee.

Change to a closer in the future flight, whatever is the earliest bootable date. Don’t know what you paid but if you can find something of equal price it’s your best bet to get cancelled for a refund. This won’t take away the ability to cancel for credit later.

Benefit of booking through a travel agent.

Tradeoff is no residual ETC on cheaper exchanges.
