I'm in shock. I can't even get myself to click on the links to read the articles. This was someone who had such a tremendous part in upholding a elevated spiritual level of the Yeshiva world. He was the definition of the word "profound", he was able to make each individual truly understand the Daas Torah in such a brilliant yet relatable way.

I consider it a compound tragedy because my children have no idea who he was. To them, he was just a picture in a gedolim collection. They had no inkling of the sheer gadlus who was living among us, protecting us and serving as a role model for us.

What A loss for Klal yisrael

An amazing story going around that 1 year there were many unfortunate deaths happening in Gateshead. R Mattisyahu Zatzal cried out with such intensity that Rosh Hashana by nesaneh tokef that he popped a blood vessel and it erased the words "Roa Gzaira" from the machzor. That year Gateshead did not have even 1 levayah. (I've seen pictures of the machzor)

I want to go but Lakewood is far from work for me but maybe will the aron go to ey and maybe stop at jfk? Any details pls share tia

He used to daven for the amud for Neila in the Simcha Room (now Bais Shalom) and I can still hear the way he cried by avinu malkeinu

If there was one thing that he was moser nefesh for it was over limiting use of technology. He was on the forefront of promoting filters and limiting smartphones and internet at a time when many thought the whole idea was totally crazy. The way it is considered obvious in many frum circles that internet and smartphones MUST have filters is almost entirely to his credit. There is a good chance that without him you would not see flip phones around at all. He literally wore himself down over it and his health was never the same after. IIRC, the first time he was in the hospital from which he never fully recovered was in the lead up to the Citi Field asifa

Had the zchiya to daven with him shabbos at the NYU hospital some 10 years ago. I was very saddened to see him so weak in the wheelchair not long after seeing him at Citi field כגבור במלחמה.
And true, while most of the frummer world lived in denial about the internet, it was him who turned the world over and brought us to where we are today.

I heard an odom choshuv suggest that the sitra achra harmed him because of his outspoken kana'us against the internet, which in his own words was the S"A last stand before the geula. He said that R' Matisyahu knew the risk, and said he was willing to be moser nefesh to save klal yisroel.
If your memory of his hospitalization is correct, it supports the theory...
