Benefits and Odds of becoming a Notary Public...
« on: January 29, 2012, 10:55:43 AM »
Why should a person become a Notary Public, unless he has a lot of tickets to fight etc.. or he is required to become so by law (shipping, Pharmacy, etc...)?
Does a Notary actually have to look thru what he signs, or the signature is just that he know that person as a trusted one?

Anyone here....

You need to take the notary exam and pay the applicable fees. The exam is given at 123 William Street, 2nd Floor, in NYC every Wednesday. You can get all the information you need at http://www.dos.ny.gov/licensing/notary/notary.html.

If one passed the bar, he doesn't have to take the exam. He just has to apply and viola!

I became a notary just because and you can't imagine how grateful all my friends are for it.  :)
I'm not sure how it would help with fighting tickets.
You only have to verify the signature. You don't read through the document.

Also, you're not notarizing that the person is trusted, just that the person who is signing is in fact the person who is supposed to be.

DH is an attorney. Think it's worth the fee just to have it?

In NJ I believe it's just a simple application and a $25 fee. No test.

It turns out that a CPA is not allowed to notarize client documents to be submitted to the government.
I wonder if its the same for lawyers?

Anyone know if it’s legal in NJ to charge a fee to come to someone’s location to notorize something ?

Just came across this thread.

I became a notary after one of my clients was surprised to hear that I wasn't one. I let it lapse after having to say no too many times to friends who asked me to notarize things that I shouldn't have.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Can't see why NJ would have different laws. Looks like there is a service that does this.
