Funny reading this thread when a friend reached to me today to help him apply for 0% apr cards so he recover from marrying off a child and space out some payments
I can understand someone wanting to spread out the payments for a wedding.

As a financial coach, I meet with many who can’t afford such lifestyle and vacations. Keeping up with cohens leads many to go broke.

Seems smart to me even if you have the cash. Easy MS

I totally relate to your bewilderment.

Another aspect directly related to this idea and more particularly right here on this platform that I find to be utterly ironic and bewilders me, is the culture that is propagated by this website (whether explicitly or implicitly, בין באונס בין ברצון בין בשוגג בין במזיד) .

OTOH go on a vacation to the Maldives or some other exotic/luxurious destination, or even a not so exotic destination, and splurge on all your תאוות עולם הזה like money grows on trees.

OTOH the bread and butter of the website is literally about saving you a few pennies or dollars here and there.

I find it completely sensible if you live your life within your means and consistently behave one way or the other.
What I fail to understand is the dual life; not someone who just won the lottery or has been saving all his life living frugally towards some grand trip of a lifetime, but rather folks who do this regularly.

(And obviously neither am I referring to areas where the Torah instructs us to be "מבזבז").

And as the OP already expressed, yes, you may have paid lots of it with miles and points, but you know well that you still splurged a boatload of cash on other items that are not covered by those not totally free methods.

If you have the cash, you can pay the CC bill right away and the APR doesn't matter

OP wasn't judging, was just stating facts(or opinion), the next step would be judging, which wasn't done. what's wrong with kvetching?

Where do you draw the line? It sounds like an overlap to me.

You get to keep the money for a year at 0% APR while keeping it in a HYSA at 5%.

simple. I can know that someone is OTD but not judge him by saying he's wrong and at fault. You can know the facts but not judge in a disfavorable way.

Am Ha’heavyccdebt. Just look at the national numbers and it must be even  more prevalent in our high cost way of life.  Just my 2 cents. Forget “luxury”. Just to get by on basics is enough for the family of 5plus kids to be in debt

Unless you can MS, in which case you just recycle monthly to make double digit APY rather than 5%.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Yes but BG MS is with risks and stress and desperate people do desperate things

Sorry, MS on high debt isn't sustainable

My biggest accomplishment in life after quiting smoking, wax getting my cc debt clean.

I use credit cards all day every day but I no longer carry a balance I cannot pay off

Regardless, this post isn't about credit cards specifically. It's about a life style and spending.

25 years ago there was few high end kosher dinning in Miami.

Most of the heimish visitors were centered around 41'st street.

Anyone know what the crown or the Saxony charged?

Jews always vacationed, I just don't think they vacationed to marionbad etc in Cadillac escalades they couldn't afford

I just fail to see the point In luxury where it's become obscene, least of which you cannot afford

Not sure if I’m going on a tangent but the standard of living is just rising, have you seen the Jewish supermarkets (and their prices ) recently ??
Life is more expensive and maybe young couples are indeed stepping up and making more, and maybe you’re right it’s not a sustainable thing when the family grows faster than their paycheck they’ll plateau and maybe not go to Miami and spend a ton.
I have a friend who grew up comfortably, not crazily though and always shopped at gourmet glatt. When he got married I told him you’re probably gonna start shopping at kol save just bc you’re paying for the groceries now and he didn’t believe me.
They shop at kol save now. (They’ll eventually move to gg but just not at this time!)
nothings impossible- the word itself says Im possible
