Do foreign countries know if a passport was canceled?
« on: February 13, 2024, 09:07:31 PM »
I canceled my Israeli citizenship, but never surrendered my passport. As Murphy's law works, only now could I have a potential benefit from an Israeli passport, since I need to travel to Russia, and Israelis are one of the very few nationalities that can enter Russia without a visa.

Would Russian immigration authorities have any way to know that a passport has been invalidated if there is no physical indication of such?
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

I can't see how they won't. Once they scan it they'll probably get a giant alert.

And what's your plan? You arrive to Russia on a bad passport. What now? Put on the next flight back, or.............

I think your only angle is to see if the passport is actually cancelled or not. Israeli bureaucratic incompetence may be your friend here.

How?

How it wouldn't actually be cancelled? No idea.

How to check? Fly somewhere kosher with both passports and try using the Israeli one first.

There might be an easier way but this is the first I thought of.

Do countries communicate these things with each other? Is there a global database?

I thought of that idea. Not sure if that would be cheaper than a Russian visa.

Definitely, but no idea if Russia is part of that.

The entire holdup is a visa?? As much as a pain in the neck that can be, I don't think the alternative is worth the risk.

If you're able to get a legit visa just go for that IMO.

At around $450 each, that's $900 potential saving. But I wouldn't take the risk.

If only South Africa would be more competent in locating an old birth certificate, I would be able to get EU passports for my family, and save money due to lower fees for EU citizens.

Just pointing out that EU passports are not exactly free.

I'd think invalidating a passport is top of the list, and that Israel must give Russia easy validation access to continue the visa waiver program

Just saying that Israel itself probably has no recollection that you gave up your citizenship, had that as well

5 years ago I paid in the $400 price range.  It's good for 5 years.
But maybe part of the fee was for an expediter. I gave the passport in locally and they took care of it.  I didn't go to the Russian Embassy.

I was also fooled by that price list.

Unless it's an emergency you can't apply at the consulate in person. You must use a service, there are extra fees, and the bottom line ends up roughly $450.
