If Amex is refunding these GCs, would think a restaurant would happily offer to refund if a test fails, since if it succeeds it means a lot of $$ sponsored by Amex. No?

Yes, you will get the rest of the credit when using it later.

Btw, I already used my card a few times at this merchant and the credit was only triggered once, so I don't know when/if it will work.

Thanks for replying. Did you use this card at this merchant online or in store or both? Was the charge that triggered the credit done online or in store? Perhaps that would make a difference?
