Hi all, I am on the Kowloon shul email list because we paid for Shabbat dinners and donated to them and I was very sad when I read this email. I know many of us have benefited from the services of this shul and also the Chabad there (I'm assuming they have been affected also). I wanted to share in case others wanted to support them.
@Dan I thought maybe you might want to cover this on DDMS as part of a larger Corona Virus travel story from a Jewish angle. One of the most powerful lessons my children took from our trip to Asia was what the Chabad and these Sephardic shluchim give up to support the Jewish community and also what these businesman do to honorably support their families while also keeping their frumkeit. The vast majority of people at the shabbat meal in Kowloon were hard working, married men (many of whom were ashkenazi) travelling to China to support their families and although they couldn't get home for every Shabbat, they could enjoy some Shabbat menucha this community created, and you could really feel the bonds they had built with each other from all their shared meals and experiences. All these people are still going to need to travel for business in the coming years but if there is no longer infrastructure to support them, it would be very sad (this isn't even getting into the many vacationers that have enjoyed their food and hospitality). Anyway, if anyone wants to give a few dollars, here is the e-mail in it's entirety (I did take out bank account info because I didn't want it on the internet and if anyone wants to give them a bank draft then you can contact them). It looks like they have raised 242k of their 300k goal but maybe we can help them get a little closer.
Dear ,
The situation at our Shul in Hong Kong just went from bad to worse. First were the protests which decreased attendance in Hong Kong by 50% over the last 6 months, and now this new CoronaVirus is completely obliterating foreign attendance down to near ZERO.
As result, we are $300,000 in arrears for prior obligations and are faced with a major dilemma how to pay rent, insurance, utilities, etc. This number will only increase overtime….
With attendance currently reduced by nearly 100%, there is no money coming in at all. We are cutting expenses wherever we can…
I am asking all those who have experienced Rabbi Meoded and his wife’s hospitality, or that have business in china or used to, to please come forth during this time of need.
I can’t do this alone, I am asking for 30 people/companies to come forth and give 10k or commit to raising 10k in the next thirty days. I need people from all over the world to join in this effort; New York, Panama, Brazil, Canada, Mexico etc…
