What did you guys use for cell service while you were there?

Pick up a local SIM? Roam on your US carrier?

The Chabad Rabbi mentioned they have kosher frozen chicken at times. They sell out.

I went to Aruba with my parents in January, basically my first time being strictly Kosher on vacation. I am a newcomer to the Heimishe/Chabad world, and I have had too many experiences of doing the non-Kosher dairy and fish thing, and winding up with a drop of (or significant amount of) trief. I went to a market and had them vacuum-seal my food, and they were very careful to only have me order food that wouldn't spoil. I thought I wouldn't have enough, but between the generous portions, and the even more generous hand of the Chabad at Aruba, I only had to go to a restaurant one night. Let me explain what I did here; the french fries were probably not Kosher, but I brought heschered aluminum foil to the Hadicurari restaurant and had them make a fish. Somehow I got paper and plastic, and drank a soda out of a plastic cup. We stayed in the Marriott Surf Club, which was not a typical resort and rather expensive, but it was very helpful (if not necessary) to have the full kitchen and dinning room. The local markets had lots of Kohser foods, just not Glatt meat, Chalov Yisroel, or Pas Yisroel products. What is left, in that case? The basics, such as condiments (jelly, peanut butter), water, etc. Aruba should hopefully only become more Kosher as time goes on, and, other than eating in the room alone, I would recommend it.

Thinking about a trip beggining of sep.got 15k rountrip tickets on sthwst & used companion pass for the other:).Few questions about Aruba & would love some help from the forum:
Which hotel is the nicest? Radison, ryu, Hyatt or marriot? Is there decent wifi in any/all of them? Can u buy American food products? Is the driving tough?

Thanks

Hyatt is the BEST out of all of them. Until the Ritz opened down the road, it was the finest property on the island. As for the driving, it is a little tough, as the island is kind of sparse for infrastructure. Honestly, unless you have children and are going to be doing activities all day long, all across the island, I would not recommend that you rent a car, especially in a foreign country. You can buy PLENTY of American food products on the island. It is a truly lovely place.

Just don't go expecting Hawaii. Service at hotels isn't close to comparable, beauty isn't comparable, rental cars are tiny and old, cell service is tough, kosher food is limited.
I guess I was too spoiled by Hawaii to enjoy.

But it is a while lot closer to the east coast.

Thanks for all the info. I was told radisson is nicer, so I guess it's up for debate.. I like to do activities and have driven in foreign countries before so will probably rent in the end. Can you buy kosher non-chalov Yisroel milk?

Never been to Hawaii yet, but hope to go in the winter. I have been to Puerto Rico & Costa Rica so I can handle bad/slow service. I got these tickets for 15k rountrip on southwest with wife free as companion- don't think those fares are beatable anywhere! Wife always wanted to go so I figured with the flights this cheap now is the time. I hope there is more to do than the typical jet-sking as Costa Rica really spoiled me. I'm surprised dan you never made it there-it might even give Hawaii a run for it's money.. I have radisson  & CHASE points so guess the debate is Btwn hyatt & radisson..

Nothing much in Aruba aside from the beach and jetskiing AFAIK.

I also heard the radisson is decent.
I'd stay far away from the Hyatt, though I did enjoy the 88K HGP compensation I got for the misery.

I didn't stay at the Hyatt, it looked fabulous. Radisson I haven't been to, but I have friends that have been going for years and stayed at the Hyatt. I would also look at the Ritz, because they may be running some kind of special. There should be non-CY milk on the island that has some Hescher. You can always ask the Chabad Rabbi.

I stayed at the Playa Linda Beach resort through Interval timeshare exchange.

Loved it.

Also, the Chabad house just opened across the street at the Hacienda Mall (http://JewishAruba.com)

Looks like that was 2 years ago. Do you still think it's that bad?

Also I'm trying to book for December/January time but the Hyatt web site is telling me "The special offer/rate you have selected is unavailable during the dates you have selected" . Any way around that?
