I do find Google maps annoying at times. It gives weird routes at times. I only can tell this when it's someplace local and I know the streets and know the route given is stupid.

I wish there was a way to whitelist/blacklist a road. Now I just usually make an extra stop to force it to go with the road I want. Annoying.

I have this issue with both waze and Google maps. I drive to Toronto a couple times a year and they are always telling me to take the small town route which they think saves a minute or two but usually ends up with you getting stuck behind a truck for 20 miles on a one lane highway and a traffic ticket.

Wish there was way to block that route.

There have been times I have been saved on the 81 when there is construction, and waze has routed me around that.

I only use waze on familiar routes and to calculate tolls when travelling, when in unfamiliar areas I use google maps as I have found the lane turning assist more clear then waze.

I use Waze for toll calculations, gas stations, and to see traffic hotspots. I don't necessarily follow its guidance on familiar routes. Maybe Google maps lane assist improved, but it once cost me a lot of time by giving me unclear instructions at a fork that wasn't very simple (approaching the Holland tunnel), I have avoided it since for lane assist. Maybe it's time to revisit. Based on @~King Lake~'s screenshots above, I like Google Maps phone screen interface the best.

When comparing alternative routes suggested, I look at the estimated times as well as the roads taken, before making a selection.

IINM Waze has an option to avoid route (and presumably also learns your habits and suggests routes you prefer).

There are several cheaper options as well. I have a family member that uses one with their iPhone.

The timing on Google maps voice is also perfected. Waze is a tad (too) slow

I have very little experience with google maps but when I started using Apple maps my favorite feature which I still love today is that it has almost every traffic light and stop sign on the map which makes for an easier drive. I also found the instruction to be much clearer and easier to understand than waze.

(I have been told that Google maps  is similar in this regard but I haven't really used it ever)

But apple music could. This is very convenient for those who pay for apple music to share it with a android device.
