Wisdom Tooth Extraction
« on: January 31, 2012, 04:55:13 PM »
My wife just came come from the dentist who said she'll need to have her 4 (impacted) wisdom teeth extracted (ouch!). A quick call to the oral surgeon for a price quote: $2310 (double ouch!). Aside from asking them to do it w/o Novocaine  :) any ideas on a more cost effective route? Does anyone have experience withany of the "no waiting period" dental insurance plans advertised in the "heimesh" press?

hi

i got 4 pulled at the same time and paid $0!

how you ask????

my brother was in dental school and he did it for me. if you know someone in a dental program, they can "practice" on you and you will either get it done at a heavily discounted price or free!

trust me, she will be in pain. but she wont have the double pain. ($$$)

hope this helps.

p.s.- dont worry about the "dentist" being a student. there is always an actual dentist standing over them.

fly to Israel or Hungary with points and you'll end up cheaper, there are people doing it all the time with 'root canal' the prices are half or less then in the US, they also have very good American-trained dentists in israel

Yep creditor is exactly right. I have an American Dr located near the plaza in Israel if you'd like. It was 125 a tooth including everything. May be a drop more if it's impacted etc.

WHen my son needed some extractions a few years ago, I found an oral surgeon on the Northeast Dental Plan discount program -- and saved a lot of $.  It's not insurance -- just a network of dentists who have agreed to provide services for a pre-determined discount rate schedule.  You can find out exactly what it will cost either on the schedule or by calling the Dr.'s office and telling them you have the discount plan.  Here's the link...there is even a way to buy the discount  plan from some other websites for less -- search dental discount plans.

If I may ask: which insurance do you have that doesn't cover it?
I had my 4 wisdom teeth pulled out under Americhoice (Medicaid sponsored) and it didn't cost me a dollar.

She is on United Healthcare community (Medicaid) Plan D. AFAIK only Plan A covers Dental. Am I wrong?

I don't know the difference. But I was obviously under the one Medicaid pays, and I still got coverage. I think it all depends on the DR's if they accept it or not.

Check out Aetna dental access. Also not a dental insurance but a dental plan with reduced rates. Will still cost you a pretty penny, but a reduced one

You should hook him up...

he can hook up himself. all his has to do is call any local dental program. they all have these types of deals. they will give him a steep discount. or he can become buddy buddy with a student and he might be able to get it for free, if the student has an in with the office. it really is so simple.

UPDATE: Center for Oral and Maxiofacial Surgery (Dr. Elbaum) in Jackson was recommended by many. They charge $450 per tooth plus a consult visit ($85) (The panoramic x-ray ($90 can be sent to them from the dentist).
They participate in the UHP dental savings plan. The plan costs $130 a year (Rosenbaum, advertises in the Lakewood weeklies) and will discount the consult visit by 25% and will reduce the cost per tooth to $257. The total cost would be $1222.
Does anyone know of a way to get done cheaper?

I can't offer much insight regarding the costs.  But regarding the practice,  I used them a few years ago to get my wisdom teeth removed.

I don't know if its still the same, but it used to be a father and son by the name of elbaum, plus some other doctors.  The father only works at the freehold location - not Jackson.  He was really good and has many years experience.  (He might've retired by now,  he was like 70 when I used him).

Do you have medical insurance? That will not cover it?

Medical insurance only covers "dental" that is required due to an accident or a congenital issue -- nothing else.  Need "Dental" insurance for any dental procedures.
