They plan on staying open, but I wouldn't recommend buying GCs for use far into the future.

A relative of mine bought a few thousand dollars worth.

He was planning to flip it after the sale. I hope he did so, already.

Why ask people to take a loss?

I get free market and all , but 5% really makes a difference that it's worth asking someone to take a loss?

When people bought these it was not risky. Lets say I buy one now and in a couple of days they stop accepting them, before I had a chance to use it. It is much more risky to buy them now obviously

And also, it hasn't been 50% off in 2024. Pretty cringe to ask for 55% off, but to each their own.

It's not hard for a couple to go there for brunch or lunch and buy a box of pastries to go for the kids and spend $100 (and pay $50).

For now, the courts say they are valid as Patis asked for them to continue honoring them while going through ch 11. Yes, there is more risk now, which is why you should only buy it if you're going to use it in the near term.

So, does the 5% extra discount justify that risk?

I dont know his intentions. Obviously if you are using it ASAP then 50% is great but if he just wants to buy it to hold on to it for a bit and doesnt feel comfortable risking $50, I see that side too

I wouldn't recommend buying it to hold at any price. It's a great deal if you just want to pop in for a meal, or for pastries and coffee in the near term.

I'd use them myself for that if I was in NYC. Usually I bring back from NYC a couple boxes of pastries to freeze, which the kids love for Shabbos breakfast.
