Electric bicycles have become a common sight on Israel’s streets. Especially as the country’s streets have become more congested, bikes have become a convenient way to get around. Now, in a move aimed at improving regulation and safety on the roads, Israel’s Ministry of Transportation has announced that, starting August 1, 2024, all electric bike and scooter owners must register their vehicles and affix a license plate.
This requirement applies to Israeli and foreign citizens alike. Additionally, applicants are required to hold a valid Israeli driver’s license. Foreign citizens may utilize their valid foreign license for one year from the date of entry to Israel. After that time, they are required to obtain an Israeli license. See here for information on converting a foreign license to an Israeli license.
Those who do not possess a regular driver’s license will be required to obtain a special license for light vehicles. To do this, they will be required to pass a written driving test. The test may be taken from age 15.5, although actual driving can commence only at age 16.
Israeli citizens and foreigners can register their light vehicle on this page. The registration form requires one to enter the applicant’s ID number, the name of the manufacturer, color and serial number of the vehicle.
Once the applicant receives an ID number for the vehicle via SMS, they must have a license plate issued and affixed to the vehicle at a recognized service center. Service locations can be found here. The cost of issuing a license plate is 70 NIS.
Presently, it is not possible to register one’s light vehicle without a phone that has SMS. Chaim V’Chessed has reached out to officials in the Ministry of Transportation who are attempting to resolve this issue.
