Facebook Obliteration - Deleting - Shredding
« on: July 26, 2024, 07:13:16 AM »
Unless you have a good reason to use it, typically Facebook has many disadvantages which is most likely obvious to anyone.
The idea to keep in touch with family and friends is great, and the business use might be there for some.
However, I came to the conclusion that it pushes so many narratives and opinions, clips, suggestions that are not only often unhealthy to watch, but also with heavily accented on the 'wrong' side of the political spectrum and in my case, despite for blocking and disliking, always an anti Israeli agenda.
The main reason for me was the tremendous waste of time that comes by using it, especially with the app (which I do not use).

The benefits for Facebook are clear, for the user often none, on the contrary.
Even deleting will make you lose access, but all you ever liked or commented will remain.

I did NOT open the thread to discuss my previous points, rather help people close their Facebook account, and helping them clean their history in the process. (if you don't, in many years, when you have no access, you might no longer be happy about your actions there)

TBH, I once opened a FB account in order to try to contact an old friend. It didn't really help and I closed it.

I can't fathom why people would be on that platform.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Years of active use could lead to 100k's of activity to delete...

The instructions are not all encompassing, but should help deleting the history:

  • On a PC, go to www.facebook.com
  • On the left hand side, click (almost on top), on your Name
  • Now click on the 3 horizontal points
  • In the Dropdown click on Activity Log
  • (You might have to follow the above steps several times as Facebook will move you to a page, where the back button won't bring you back to it)
  • You will want to work gradually your way down all those Activities on the left and delete them
  • Note: some of those allow selecting multiple, and others you can only choose one by one.
  • Those that allow multiple, click about 5x on the scroll down bar, and so more results will appear. You can then go back to the top and select the checkbox [ ] All. (if I selected more than 200 in one shot, it would give an error and not delete.)
  • I would appreciate insights for mass deleting those those activities that FB limits deleting to one by one.
  • To delete Friends related things, I found between all those time wasting Chrome extensions one that actually works: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/autofriends/pmpbhhdmaaccngiofnbaelglocmabnae
  • Once you have cleared all, you might want to change your name on Facebook by going to https://accountscenter.facebook.com/?entry_point=app_settings , clicking on your name and changing it to something unrecognizable.
  • (If you have previously confirmed your name, it won't let you change it, unless you can prove to them that you officially changed name, etc)
  • (If you know a fix for that, please share)

As a european, don't european regulations require companies to allow you to request for them to lose all your data?

Maybe those people succeeded. Also, groups. (I suppose alternative
venues for groups exist, but maybe that's just where the group is.)

+1 I use Facebook for marketplace and groups.

Marketplace- I find it easier and comfortable than using Craigslist. I've had lots of friends told me they have purchase second hand items such as bikes cars etc...

Groups- the amount of information shared is invaluable. From hobby's to searching for information about cities for travelling etc. lots of useful information shared. Reddit is pretty good too for that.

Truth to be told, by far the best travel info is found on israeli/groups/forus, that are not doing it with the affiliate links etc in mind.
Use Google translate if needed.
This forum is also great, but some threads are sometimes so long, and should really be available in compacter and updated form in a wiki.

While more agressive concerning privacy, they have to change if you request your info to change etc, unless they can prove it has been verified.
Also, it only concerns your private info, and if one posted on FB, I presume it does not benefit from the private status.

Theoretically they allow deleting all, but make it very difficult.

After "batch" deleting many friends, every second friend I delete, my accounts gets locked, and while I can unlock it, it became practically  undoable.

Write them a nasty letter invoking the statute and requesting all your info including posts be deleted. See what they say?

I understand. But are those benefits worth the disadvantages? Is there a way to get those anonymously and without getting emails?

I ended up deleting using home made scripts, chrome extensions etc.
Over a span of several days I erased all my Facebook contents.
