There's generally a state minimum for liability that the rental company has to cover. Don't go smashing any BMW's or Lexus' and you should be fine. (In other words, when you play bumper cars, stick to Ford and Hyundai...)

When buying a car there is a 117% taxes to be paid.

I think that explains some things.

Driving a car in doesnt have any tax though (I believe). I know an english guy who drove a bmw to Israel (ferry from Italy or somewhere) and then claimed the car was stolen. Got his insurance money and an expensive car while in Israel. Im not saying what he did is ok, but it makes sense to drive or have a car driven in, instead of paying those taxes.

Yeah but he drove in as a visitor, not sure what he did with the car in the end. If you buy in the USA you then have to pay shipping costs, and you are not considered visiting, so they apply the tax to you. I have a friend who shipped car from America and he had to pay the taxes.

If you are full israeli, thats what you pay, a ole chadash or tourist is exempt.

there are ways to reduce it, by getting over a certain age or mileage when importing them.

Go through an agent. Online fees aren't gonna be what it says, add insurance and possibly underage for a 23 year old

+1.

I made reservations online for dirt cheap only to realize that insurance is not included (even if you have a CC providing CDW your still required to pay for mandatory liability insurance).

I ended up renting through Hocker (DDF member) for a great price/size car and there wasn't any underage fee (I'm 23 as well).

On Ben Gurion's website it says that Avis you can pick up and drop off at the terminal and some of the other car rental's you only drop off, is that true?

things change. Avis both pickup and drop off are in the terminal. Most others have pickup in Terminal and drop off out of terminal.
