I personally think that it's a mistake for Trump to do this. Firstly, he worked very hard over the last months to build the image as a really serious person, and this sort of negates that. It's quirky, and I don't think it gets him too much political points. We are used being called garbage by the dems, and it's not a new or shocking attack. Also, most of his supporters were focused on the important matters and were convinced that they need to vote for Trump, as the recent polling trends showed - this somewhat diverts the attention from the things that really matter, and can lead to a lower turnout due to the lower feeling of urgency.
