Los Cabos TR, WA / Zadun RC
« on: September 02, 2024, 11:19:22 PM »
Booking Process:

“Where to go?” is the common question. We were looking for something
special as we weren’t bringing any kids along, but it couldn’t be for
too long for the same reason. A four-night Sunday-to-Thursday trip
would have to do. After JJ posted about the Zadun RC, I started to
look into Los Cabos (even though we’ve already been to CUN, MEX, and
PXM). It seemed like the perfect place, with some beautiful
properties, views, attractions, and of course, food.

One of the more common properties where Jewish people seem to go is
the Waldorf, as it’s a gorgeous resort that’s bookable with FNC at
120,000 Hilton pts per night. Also, its proximity to the beautiful
Chabad shul, which includes a delicious fleishig food place (stopping
short from calling it a restaurant), makes it a no-brainer. Not having
any Hilton Points nor Amex wasn’t much of a problem, as there’s DDF. I
bought two FNCs from the same Diamond Account at $325 each. For a
total of $650, valued at $2,000, it felt pretty good.

So why not stay there the whole time? Well, after seeing the videos
from Zadun and the kosher options they have, DW and I were very
tempted to experience that. I felt this could be the perfect time as
we were only going for four nights, so I didn’t need the 5th night
free from Hilton or Marriot. So we decided to split the time between
the two.

Now, Marriot wanted around 140,000 pts per night for the dates I
was looking at, and there were no Chase transfers at that time. So not sure
how to go about booking this, I booked through the Chase portal with
Sapphire Preferred for 155,651 pts just to secure the price, and
figured I’ll cancel within 24 hours if I find a better option. My mistake,
as non-refundable hotel bookings don’t get the 24-hour policy. But the
Chase Rep kindly got in touch with someone and said she was able to
cancel it and refund me, and within minutes my points were back in my
account (but I never got a cancelation email which I’ll get back to
later). I then decided to upgrade my Preferred to the Reserve and
booked through Chase using the $300 Reserve Credit, and my points were
now worth 1.5. I booked an ocean-view ground-floor room, which
included daily breakfast for two and a $100 resort credit, for 125,000
pts + $308.

Flights:

It’s close to a six hour flight from NYC. The only direct flights were
JFK to SJD with JetBlue, and those planes don’t have Mint class.
Without having much of a choice I paid 56,000 Blue points + $250 for
two RT tickets in blue economy.

Trip: Part 1

Sunday morning we have a 10:10 AM flight. Being that Los Cabos is
three hours behind EST, we’ll arrive at 12:50 PM. Airport is pretty
busy as it’s August. We head straight to TSA pre-check, as were not
checking anything in.
Our briefcase gets checked to see if the bottle
of milk is still frozen; BH it was. We get to the gate and see it’s
gonna be a full flight. After boarding, we’re already on the runway
when there’s an announcement that they got a new route and need more
fuel, so that causes a long hour delay.

We land at about 2:00 PM. Security checks one of our bags of snacks,
but all is fine. We head outside to the car rental shuttles. Weather
is hot, probably in the high 90’s with some breeze. I rented with
Cactus as all other companies had terrible reviews, and indeed we were
very satisfied, paid in full before, and no extra charges.

We take the longer but nicer route to the WA, driving along the water
some of the time. It takes about 50 min. Arriving to the WA, you drive
through this carved-out rock/tunnel, and indeed there is light at the
end of that tunnel.

Valet takes your car, hands you fresh-scented
towels, and offer drinks as you sit in the beautiful outdoor lobby
overlooking the ocean.

We were a little tense as I was booked as a 2nd guest and wasn’t able
to get a digital key before to avoid the check-in. As the receptionist
realized I was a 2nd guest, he started asking questions, like is the
primary guest coming etc... Being in touch with the FNC seller, we
both told the hotel that she’s coming in late. Meanwhile he went back
to the desk, and a long two minutes later, he came back with our key
cards and said it’s fine; sigh.

He brought us to our room and
explained everything about the hotel. He asked us what time we wanted
our room service etc. We told him that we eat kosher so he made a note
on our room, and told us we can go to the kitchen in the morning and
speak to the chef for all our needs. They were very accommodating
throughout with incredible service; I made sure to tell him that more
kosher guests would be coming.

Due to Diamond Status, we got upgraded from Pacific-view to
ocean-view, which was weird as I always thought the Pacific was the
ocean…

The standard rooms are beautiful. They include a nice balcony with a
(mostly) private plunge pool, a full tub and shower, a fireplace,
mini-fridge with all drinks included (water, Coke, seltzer). They also
gave a complimentary bottle of kosher tequila, which was really nice.

They then brought us a bowl with a whole avocado, tomato, lime and
onion, (with some non-kosher tortilla chips), and a bucket with two
ice-cold Corona beers. That’s when I felt Mexico… We cut up the
veggies and noshed on them with some rice cakes to get us till dinner.

We sat and enjoyed till it was time for dinner. We got a golf-cart
ride to the end of the tunnel and it was a peaceful 5-min walk to
Chabad from there.

Ray’s Cabo, the Chabad eatery, is an eat-in takeout kind of place,
with heimeshe music playing too loud. Was not full and probably had a
total of three people working there. Menu had some burger options,
ribeye steak, schnitzel plate, etc. We went with the Mariachi Burger
and the Ribeye, which were both delicious and reasonably priced.
Walked out very satisfied.

Monday morning at 9:00 AM, we went to the poolside restaurant where
breakfast is served. They sat us down and replaced the cutlery with
plastic ware. We got free continental breakfast with our booking,
which includes freshly-squeezed juice, fruits and cereal. For $20, you
can upgrade to eggs and vegetables, so we did that. They called us in
to the kitchen; we turned on the fire and cracked the eggs, handed the
chef our pan and gave him bread to toast. It was a solid and filling
breakfast, and it was 10:00 AM.

We planned this to be a balanced trip between some fun activities and
relaxing, so we figured we’ll do the trips the first half and relax
the second half.

Through Viator (Trip Advisor), we booked ziplining and UTV with Cabo
Adventures for Monday morning. I pre-paid $198 for two tickets and $78
for insurance and fees once we arrived. A shuttle came to pick us up
at 10:25 from the hotel lobby. We drove about 1.5 hours to the
destination. It was a really fun trip; the crew was great and there’s
lots of daring ziplines, some crossing over waters. There was one
40-ft swing drop and a 60-mph mega zipline at the end. It also
included some hiking between zipline locations.

They didn’t let any phones or cameras cuz they had their own photographer catching every
moment. But afterwards, they charged $109 minimum for the pictures and
videos, so we don’t have any. That was pretty upsetting. The UTVing
was after the ziplining. It was about 15 min; we got really sandy, but
had a blast. The shuttle took us back to the hotel. The time was about
5:30, so it was a full-day trip but plenty worth it.

Back at the room, there was a bowl with whole avocados, tomatoes,
onions, and tortilla chips waiting for us. This time it was wrapped in
plastic; I think they think that makes it kosher.

For dinner we headed back to Ray’s Cabo. Tried another burger and the
schnitzel plate which was crispy and tasty.

Rabbi Benny Hershkovitz, the Chabad rabbi, had Yahrzeit, so there was
a minyan Maariv, though at that time of year there usually isn’t
minyan. I went over to say hi and he asked me what I’m doing on this
side of town, remembering my name from booking the mashgiach for Zadun
RC (which we’ll get to).

Back at the hotel, there was a small band playing some music next to
the bar and restaurant with three people watching, so we stayed around
a little and ordered our own crafted cocktail they made for us with
the kosher ingredients they had. We then headed to the overwater
restaurant to enjoy it with the churros we purchased at Ray’s; we took
it to-go since we were too full to eat it after our meal.

Tuesday morning, we had pre-booked through Viator to go parasailing at
10:30, but they cancelled on us cuz they needed another two people to
join. So after breakfast which was just as good as the day before, we
went to concierge to see if they have any other options for
parasailing. They had a place that they work with but wanted $100 pp;
I originally paid $75, so he suggested we go to the beach and find a
local place for cheaper.

I didn’t wanna bother with parking, so we took an Uber for $5 to the beach, and to our luck, the driver had a friend that does parasailing. It’s called Happy Los Cabos. He charged
us $65 pp and we had a wonderful time. We got to see the famous Arch, which is supposedly a must, and some beautiful views. They took pictures for us and sent it (for free).

We got back to the hotel at 12:00 PM. I asked for late checkout (BUT
I’M A DAIMOND GUEST); they said the hotel is at full capacity so they
can only give till 1:00 PM, which was perfect for us. We packed up and
headed out for a 45 min drive to Zadun, a Ritz Carlton Reserve.

Trip Part 2:
As we’re on the way to Zadun, we decide to make a stop at the grocery Fresko to stock up on some chips and nuts. The drive up to the property is beautiful as you pass way too many palm trees and a few other hotel properties. We arrive at 2:30 PM and we’re greeted with superb service as we sit down to check in.

As I’ve noted in Part 1, I had booked my first room through Chase and canceled it, but never got a confirmed cancellation; it showed up as confirmed in My Trips. I thought it must have been a mistake and there really was nothing booked, cuz in my Marriott account I only saw one room booked.

But I was happily wrong. I discovered this on the plane, as the hotel emailed me asking about my two rooms. So trying to utilize this opportunity, I told them I can’t cancel it as it’s not refundable, and since I would not be needing it, they can clear it up with the front desk. I added that I would really appreciate if they can give me an upgrade.

So as I’m checking in, the manager comes out and gives his heartfelt apologies about the mishap of my booking, and reassures us that he upgraded us to the Cortes Suite (valued at least $2,000 per night). So that worked out pretty well.

Our butler drove us to our suite and gave us a small tour. We were blown away by it. The pool is about three times the size of the standard plunge pool, there’s a nice fire pit, gorgeous patio, and lots of indoor and outdoor seating.

There was a complimentary kosher bottle of wine waiting for us, which was nice. I had a feeling that the drinks wouldn’t be free here, so I stocked up from WA (which was free) and they kindly cleared the fridge for me. (Warning! The RC carries Pepsi, so I was really lucky to bring Coke from WA).

We got all the information we needed, exchanged numbers and the butler said he’s always just a text away.

We had lunch scheduled for 3:00 PM, and let’s get into how that works. The cost for the Mashgiach is a flat fee of $200 per day, in addition to whatever you order for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I contacted Chabad of Cabo a few weeks ahead and paid them directly. They then cleared it with the hotel.

So a few days before our trip, I was in touch with the hotel, and they sent a menu for the day we arrive. There’s a menu for each day of the week. The menus are not big, but you can always ask if they have anything else they could make for you.

So the not-so-convenient part of this is that you have to know what you’ll be in the mood of eating some time in advance, and set times for your meals. It’s understandable why they have to work that way, but it could take away from the luxury & relaxation of vacation.

So they brought the lunch to our room in a warmer; everything is wrapped and sealed with the Mashgiach’s name on it. They ask you permission to remove it and set it up real nice. I had another burger (it was different type) which was delicious and some fish tacos and guacamole and chips. Everything was yum.

The overall calm and tranquility in the resort is really something.

We had a lot of relaxing time as dinner was scheduled for 8:30 PM, and I was really hoping I’d be a little hungry by then. For dinner, we had the short ribs and some salad. It was okay, but it’s good we weren’t really so hungry. The cocktail was good.

We then headed back to our room and had the fire pit lit under a sky full of stars, hearing the water crash on the beach. Took out my speaker and played Avraham from 8th Day (which is hands down from their best) and lost track of time.

Breakfast to our suite at 10:00 AM sounded good, and tasted delicious. The paid breakfast includes one juice, one coffee or tea, and one main. I ordered the lox on a sourdough and DW had the oatmeal thing.

Then we did some more relaxing and we went to sit by the resort’s pool which was not too full. At 2:30 PM, we headed to the beach restaurant for lunch. Sitting in this stunning setting, having cutlery set up in front of you with some delicious, fresh catch-of-the-day fish dishes brought to you is surreal. Even though I’m not such a big fish eater, I really enjoyed it.

And then again - relaxing, pool, repeat. While we were out of the suite, they did the whole tub set up thing, without us asking, so that was a nice gesture.
Dinner was scheduled for 7:30 PM at the Mexican restaurant, as they were having Mariachi’s perform that night.

On the original menu, we didn’t really see anything we wanted so we asked what meat options they have. They gave us some options and we went with the skirt steak which was actually really good and tasty (and the cheapest, the others were not fairly priced). We also had some Fettuccine pesto pasta, which was delicious.

The portions were nice, got really full, and from there we headed straight to the gym… but not for too long. Back at the suite, we got the fire going again.

Our flight the next day was at 1:50 PM so we planned to leave at 11:00 AM. Ordered breakfast for 9:30 AM. They also offer that you can order from their to-go menu for the way. So I took advantage of the free breakfast and ordered the more expensive main (lox on a baguette), and to that I added cream cheese bagels to take for lunch, and for dinner we got pastrami sandwiches from the to-go menu.

As we’re leaving the hotel, our butler comes to say goodbye, hands us this cute souvenir and says see you next week.

The sandwiches that we ordered were already placed in our car.
Both the WA and RC have top notch service, although it did feel more personal and exclusive at the RC.

We drove to Cactus to return the car, which was a breeze. You drive to their lot, wait in the car and someone comes to drive you in the same car to the airport. Thought that was smart as you don’t have to wait for a shuttle and move your luggage.

Airport issues: Up to here, things couldn’t have gone better B”H, but we did get a little tested in the airport. For some reason, I wasn’t able to check in online for this flight, so we had to wait some time. We head up to security, and our suitcase gets pulled aside. He starts emptying it and says you can’t take this and this, the frying pan is a weapon etc... So at that point, the only option to keep everything was to check it in for $50.

It was nice to have a VIP Lounge (PP) next to our gate. The flight was full but we got a hug from Above, as our middle seat was empty.

We arrived at JFK at around 10:00 PM, got through in minutes with GE, but then waited 40 min for the small carry on that we had to check in. Since we still had babysitting for the night we decided to stay over at the Hyatt Regency JFK to extend the vacation a little, and head back to town in the morning. Although it’s considered an airport hotel there’s no shuttle, so we took a Lyft.

It’s a pretty decent hotel but it was a hard adjustment coming from WA and RC. It kinda brought us back to reality.

B”H overall, it was a beautiful, fun, relaxing, and delicious trip.

So happy you enjoyed!

I can't wait to go back!

And for price you nailed it on the skirt steak. Great steak, good size, and normal price.

I did have the huge, expensive steak, though, and it was fantastic. fwiw. But price is not normal due to import fees etc.

Yes I was pleasantly surprised on how good  the skirt steak was.

These are the prices they gave me for the steaks.
