Renting in Monsey
« on: February 04, 2012, 11:07:02 PM »
Anybody know if it's standard to have to paint a rented apt when you leave? We're moving in to a new place and the landlord mentioned that when we leave, he wants us to paint. He also claims that in Monsey, most people come with their own fridge and stove. Is that true too?

Can I ask what your experience in the matter is? i.e. how many places have you rented?

I rent in Monsey and have many friends in Monsey who rent as well. I have never heard of someday renting an apartment and purchasing there own stove and/or fridge. As far as paint, if you ruined the paint than you need to replace it

An apartment which was lived in will never look freshly painted.

I don't know about Monsey but in Lakewood the standard is that the apartment comes with Oven and Fridge and the landlord pays to paint it between tenants.

+1, in my two apartments that I have rented in Monsey, both came with an Oven and Fridge and both were painted before I moved in (by the landlord, not the previous tenant).

In Crown Heights I've never heard of a tenant needing to bring their own stove and fridge.
as far as painting goes, the landlords who are mentchen and actually care about their apartments (as opposed to those who only want a check and otherwise like to pretend the apartment doesnt exist) paint between tenants, but the others often won't paint and the tenants need to paint if they want it to look good. (even so, I've never heard of anyone painting when they move out)

I just asked a friend of mine that does real estate management in Lkwd. He said that the landlord  does the painting - unless it was recently painted and the tenant wrecked it.

Oven/fridge is almost unheard of.

My experience was that they were good over there. We didn't move there in the end.

Rented 4 different places in Monsey, Never needed to paint (was asked once but i told him 2 words and it wasn't happy birthday)

ALWAYS included fridge & stove.

If he/she wants you to point, then at least let them show you the fine print in the rental agreement.

You can try PM'ing me with the info - I have many contacts in the Monsey real estate sphere.

2 questions about rentals: (I'm concerned with Crown Heights in particular but I imagine it's pretty similar in any heimishe community...)

When renting is it expected that you'll start paying right away or is waiting for the 1st of the next month normal? (my current place I was pretty much ready to move in immediately so I started paying right away...)

what's normal/accepted for raising the rent? (how often & how much?)

We didn't end up moving there in the end. The guy was taking way too long to get the apartment ready. Then he took too long to get the contract ready.

Someone have a basement or something very small like a studio would be good. For rental, anywhere in the Monsey area. Thanks.
