"Must-see" Sukkos in Brooklyn
« on: October 15, 2024, 06:26:14 PM »
I will be visiting NYC with some of my boys at Chol Hamoed and want to take them to see some large, beautifully decorated Sukkos or other interesting Sukkos sights. It's been a while since I lived in Brooklyn, and I am not up-to-date on the various beautiful Sukkos in Brooklyn. I would appreciate any input or any other "Jewish sites" that OOT kids would find interesting.

From what I recall in BP:
Bobov
Munkatch

I would appreciate any input on places that OOT kids would find interesting. Is there anything to see in Crown Heights during the day?

-There is a very beautifully decorated Sukkah somewhere in Flatbush, and is open to the pubic to check out.  In past years it's been advertised in the FJJ, stating the timings and location. I'd imagine that it will be again this year, but best bet would be to check the FJJ.

-You can try checking Vishnitz's Sukkah, off of New Utrecht ave and 52nd st. I saw they built a massive Sukkah extending all the way to in middle of the street. (Not sure about how they decorate it).

Hatzlacha.

I've heard that Rabbi Trenk has a must-see sukkah. I think he lives someplace near E. 5th and Ave M. But was never there and I may be wrong.
As a side note, he's such a geshmaka yid to schmooze with. He's one of a kind.

Quote from: FJJ 2010
The Marvelous Inspirational Sukkah of East 9th St.
Daniel Keren
If you live near East Ninth
Street between Avenue O and P
in Flatbush, you are well aware
of an incredible sukkah that each
year attracts many hundreds of
visitors. They come to marvel at
the unique decorations and the
wonderful ruach, atmosphere
of kedusha or spirituality that
pervades the sukkah complex.
Indeed, this mini-museum has
up till now by word-of-mouth attracted thousands of curious Jews
of all ages since its inception almost 40 years ago.
Natives of Flatbush call it simply the “Trenk Sukkah” in recognition of the fact that this continuously evolving holy work-of-art
was initiated by Rabbi Zev Trenk
with help from his family.
An Experience
You Will Never Forget
If you take the time this year
to visit the East Ninth Street
Sukkah, you will never forget
the experience. Imagine how you
decorate your sukkah. Perhaps
you hang some clusters of grapes
to give a distinct atmosphere.
And your kids hang up on the
walls some of their arts and crafts
projects along with the posters of
Torah Gedolim that come in the
mail at this time of year.
The East 9th Street Sukkah
enters another dimension in
both time and space. First off,
it is much bigger than even the
typical sukkah of a large family.
When you come into this sukkah,
your eyes focus on the incredible
giant fish tank filled with beautifully colored fish species. Now we
know that many families enjoy
having aquariums with tropical
fish in their homes. But when was
the last time that you saw a family actually bring their aquarium
into their “temporary dwelling”?
A Hope for the Future
Promised Sukkah
There are many lessons to be
learned from fish. But the main
reason you are going to find that
large fish tank in the East 9th Street
Sukkah is because it is a reminder
that one day, hopefully very soon,
we and all the righteous Yidden
around the world are going to
have the joy and privilege of sitting in that large sukkah whose
walls will be made from the skin
of the Biblical Leviason, the giant
Leviathon fish.
The large East Ninth Street
Sukkah is designed to make all
those who come to drop by and
visit feel at home. If you want,
you can bring sandwiches and
have a picnic lunch in the sukkah as there are many sinks for
members of the family and their
guests to wash when eating challahs or bread. During the day, if
you come with your children,
there are separate tables for men
and women loaded with sodas
and cakes for one to enjoy a quick
tasty snack and make a leishev basukkah brocha.
Hundreds of Framed
Photos of Gedolim
Perhaps the aspect that catches the attention of most visitors
are the many framed photos of
Gedolim from all segments of Klal
Yisroel. In addition to the great
Lithuanian styled Roshei Yeshiva
such as Rav Aharon Kotler, zt”l,
Rav Moshe Feinstein, zt”l and Rav
Yaakov Kamenetzky, zt”l; you will
see beautiful pictures of the Ben
Ish Hai, zt”l and Hacham Ovadia Yosef, shlita; along with legendary Chassidic masters. More
than 400 of the immortal Torah
giants whose contributions have
molded our Jewish world today
are on display in a most dignified
manner on the walls of the East
9th Street Sukkah.
And don’t forget the fascinating 3-Dimensional models that
were created to catch the interest and educate children of all
ages. There is one 3D model that
cleverly depicts each of the Ten
Makkos or Plagues that Hakodesh
Boruch Hu inflicted upon the
Mitzrim before the Exodus from
Egypt.
3D Models of
Various Sukkahs
A second well-thought out
3D model shows the visitor to
the Trenk Sukkah intriguing examples of 20 types of Sukkahs (i.e.
a sukkah atop a tree or a sukkah
atop a camel), with explanations
as to which are kosher and which
are not.
Live models of the 39 melachos or types of work used to construct the Mishkan, the Sanctuary in the Midbar or Wilderness
form the basis for a third 3D exhibit. One model show a person
plowing a field and a second feature an individual weaving. These
types of work are all forbidden on
Shabbos.
Open to the Public
If you know families with
children, spread the word about
this incredible opportunity. It is
an experience you won’t forget
and you will reminisce for many
years about. If it has been a number of years since you last saw the
Sukkah, you will be truly amazed
by the continuing extensions
that have been made by family
members to make it more enjoyable for all who come to visit. To
fully appreciate the special minimuseum, allow yourself about a
half-hour.
Small people talk about other people.
Average people talk about things
BIG PEOPLE TALK ABOUT IDEAS.

Does Rubashkin sukkah in Crown Heights count? Runs along half a block, a one-of-a-kind hachnasas orchim operation. Hard to describe. Here are two articles, you can see if it's something you want to check out. President St between Kingston & Brooklyn Ave.

Is there a specific "staging area" for the pickup truck Sukkos in Crown Heights? Are there any other daytime must-see recommendations in Crown Heights?

Most Sukkah mobiles park on President and Kingston, but they will leave at different times of the day so you may not see them (if you came before 11, most should still be there).

Yes!! @Sammy82 @bubkiz
Unfortunately my kids took my phone and the pics they took don't show much. We also had to rush and get back home. Spent about 20 minutes there but probably could easily spend 30-45 ( and more of schmoozing with Rabbi Trenk)
