The idea of DOGE is to reimagine and to reconsider all of the required functions of government using a blank-sheet-of-paper approach and then rebuild from the ground up the necessary agencies to fulfill these requirements, bearing in mind the technologies available today, i.e., AI and others, that can be implemented to achieve the necessary outcomes.

How much would we save and how much more efficient and effective would it be?

One of the things that I think can greatly benefit form some efficiency, is passport renewals. I'm sure there are many more, but this can to mind.

In today's day and age, we should probably be able to process a passport renewal in a matter of days rather than weeks, or sometimes months. I'm sure the process still involves a lot of unnecessary manual labor that can be automated.

@Dan can we get you to make some noise on this? Perhaps it'll get on Elon's chopping block.

That sounds like a 20+ year project, not one that will be compleated by july 4, 2026

Are you referring to the project as a whole or passport renewals specifically?

He actually says that it would take three years to plan and then one year to get it all working.

The biggest problem with this is...
That the greatest expenditures from the Govt budget are mandatory expenditures that need changes in law to cut, some of which DJT has already said he won't be touching.
Its sort of like someone figuring out which CC will give him the most points when he's hundreds of thousands of dollars underwater each month.

Ironically, both of Parkinson's laws are relevant here:

Quote from:  Wikipedia
Parkinson's law can refer to either of two observations, published in 1955 by the naval historian C. Northcote Parkinson as an essay in The Economist:[1]

- "work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion",
- the number of workers within public administration, bureaucracy or officialdom tends to grow, regardless of the amount of work to be done. This was attributed mainly to two factors: that officials want subordinates, not rivals, and that officials make work for each other.
