what to do with $15K?
« on: February 06, 2012, 09:34:24 PM »
I have about $15,000 lying around. What would be the best place to keep it? I don't need access to it for at least 2 years. I'm wary of investing...

While I'd love to share it with all of you, comments about how to transfer it to your account really won't be that helpful :)

So you're not interested in anything that's a risk I'm assuming, yes?

Perhaps I should. It would be nice to score points up there.

So you're not interested in anything that's a risk I'm assuming, yes?

Basically. I don't want to have to worry about it.

Having $15,000 just "lying around" is, essentially, losing money.

At the very least, it should be in risk-free, interest-earning vehicle to stave off at least some of the loss of purchasing power.

The gemach idea sounds really nice.  It obviously depends on your financial situation but I'd put some for investing and some for a Gemach.

Open a fidelity account, transfer the money in and out 7 times, and use the 100,000 miles you receive on a variety of mitzvos.
And you can send me the $100 Apple gc as well :)

A very low risk place after a savings account would be treasury bonds. You can buy Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities that essentially cancel out any loss you would have due to inflation.

I'm not sure it beats real-world inflation.

Open a gemach

Don't open, but lend the money to an existing-well-functioning-honest-not corrupted gemach.

Let them deal with the headaches, areivim, etc.

Fidelity has different offers for new and existing customers. Here is one for 50k AA miles when you open an account and fund with 100k. What many have been doing is open with 15k, withdraw the money, deposit 15k and rinse and repeat until you reach 100k deposited.

It's more than that. They have a few stackable promotions (unless they catch on and stop allowing the ppl to churn the money).
For opening a first time account, receive 50k miles on either AA or UA (and perhaps others) for depositing 100k. (They have other levels as well if you can't reach 100k of deposits during 90 days)
Then, you can add on a Delta offer for existing accounts with the same rewards, so another potential 50k miles.
Then, there's another stackable offer of an Apple gc, which maxes out at $500 after depositing 300k. I think the lowest level is $100 after 75k deposit.

I've been transferring in and out around 25k for the last few weeks (it takes around a week to 10 days for the money to post) and will soon be reaching 100k in deposits.
So far, I have received 30k UA, and 25k Delta, and I hope it'll all be given soon after reaching the 100k in deposits. I may try to deposit a bit more to reach a higher Apple gc, but 300k is too much since it has to be done in 90 days I think.

There's a long FT post on this where he gives a step by step guide for how to do this, but I'm not sure I'm allowed to post a link.

Then I'll do the same for my wife, and then I'll do a joint account. Hopefully, they'll all work.

If ppl are interested, we should start a new thread with data points, advice, etc.

This Fidelity thing sounds very interesting.

I'm pretty sure they'll be handing out 1099's. Does anyone know who they price their miles on those 1099's?

@Reuven, FT is linked to on DDF all the time. Can you post the link please?

You can link to FT (not a deal site) but please start a new thread to discuss that.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

+1

Or find a local Jewish institution with cash flow issues and lend it to them. I'm doing that with the yeshiva high school I went to, and I've heard that Yeshiva Chofetz Chaim does it and is very good about repaying on time.

Also, the legalities of this aren't 100% clear, but you can also get the organization to write you a tax deductible receipt for the amount of the foregone interest (if you were to file it as foregone interest you basically come out with no gain, AFAIU). You can also count the foregone interest as maaser, though obviously check with you LOR first.

Sounds like it might be a ribbis issue to me, definitely consult an LOR.
