So there is nothing to extend the AW+ for free anymore? Should I just give in and pay $5 - I really like the service.

Seems like you answered your own question.  It may be worth it to refer yourself 5 times but it just buys you 6 months and then you will have to start paying the $5

It's a scam, as reported by Seth Kugel of the NY Times and Scott J. Wilson of the LA Times.  They will actually steal your car and first born as well.
