Thanks but I'm looking for something a bit more specific :)

CMIIW but it seems Wahl & Oster are the two big players here?

If you are a Costco member, they sell a kit there that includes the trimmer and a bunch of different length combs, as well as scissors, etc.

Otherwise any of the Wahl trimmers listed on Amazon should be just fine.  I do not recommend any cordless trimmers, unless you plan on cutting hair daily.  Stick with a corded trimmer as the motor is stronger, and it is always ready to go.

I actually had a Wahl for several years (I think this one but with a different case) until it dropped and started running very loud with strong vibrations...

I would definitely go with something professional. It costs like $140 but it's a one time investment.
A. All the time you use it it will cut nicer and cleaner.
B. it will last forever. (no promises)

I did it and am glad I did.
Oster 76 is an option (I have)
Or some other ones are also good.

There is a circular thing on the side called a power screw. Using either a key or a flathead turn it while the machine is on. That may make the noise go away.

Googling it, I found: Q. My clipper/trimmer is making a loud "clunking" sound, is it broken?
A. No, the unit is not broken. Rather, it is not properly tuned and as such it is not operating at maximum power. To adjust power (tune), turn the power screw in a clockwise direction until you hear a noise. Then, slowly turn the power screw out (counter-clockwise) until the noise stops. This is maximum power.

Good to know.

(now I feel stupid for not having considered something like that :) )

Is the machine, the key difference with the professional kits or are the other components also different?

Dunno. I got a wahl and it broke after a year and a half but they replaced it for free

Seems like people are generally happy with the Wahl and it is $100 cheaper than the Oster 76. Anyone have any experience with this model available for $20.00 on Amazon?

While I don't have that exact set, I got the standard $20 Wahl from Walmart over 10 years ago and it still works great.
No need to spend more unless you are giving many haircuts every month. For my once a month it's great!

don't expect the quality of the current one to be the same as 20 years ago.
My brother has the same (cheap wahl) machine as me (at least it looks the same on the outside), but bought a few years after mine, and all his attachments are much much cheaper and flimsier than mine.

I have the classic 76 for many years. It's still going strong. (4 boys). I bought expensive metal blades to have different size haircuts.   But more recently found this plastic set that does the same job for less.
