- Asbury Park Press headline about Lakewood committe refusing to hold in person meetings contrary to claims that the online only zoom meeting reaches more residents APP reports:
Lakewood township meetings online only as citizen involvement shrinks
"In the four years since Covid-19 restricted the township committee to virtual-only gatherings after 2020, the meetings have averaged 20 minutes and less than one public comment per meeting. In 2024, for example, 12 meetings were held, averaging 21 minutes but only five included any public comments or questions at all, with most of those limited to one or two residents offering input."

Asked directly why the township committee could not take the same approach (as the BOE) with an in-person town hall meeting coupled with an online video option for those who wish to watch from home, none of the committee members offered a clear reason other than claiming it was more convenient to be online and they had personally received few complaints. - Lakewood committe claims that people can watch online faanews reports that a significant portion of Lakewood residents are effectively excluded from participating in or even accessing these virtual meetings. Many families in Lakewood, home to a large population of school-age children, are restricted by school policies requiring parents to pledge that their homes will not contain internet access, smartphones, or other smart devices. This restriction prevents these families from viewing or participating in online meetings.
Compounding the issue, many residents adhere to religious guidelines established by leading rabbis, who advocate refraining from internet-enabled devices, such as smartphones, tablets, or computers. These residents often rely on “kosher phones,” which are stripped of internet access and basic functions like email. As a result, they cannot watch or engage with virtual meetings.“When the township holds meetings exclusively online, it’s as if they’ve locked the door to the majority of the population,” said one frustrated resident. “We’re left without any way to participate in decisions that impact our lives.”

What is the argument against hybrid (in person and online) meetings?

No sorry.

There's zero outreach to constituents all they care about is the vaaaaads endorsement

The mentality of what's the matter meet me in Lowe's on Sundays works for a community with a population of 10k max.

They use TLS as there primary communication method and only posting responses when comfortable to do so.

I want this entire thing open and transparent

I am looking forward for a portal where residents can post or up vote issues and possible resolutions, and processes to move the needle in government so we can get a basic idea of pressing topics and how they can be solved

Everything should be transparent, and modeled to be used by any county or township, if there are any developers that want to work with me on this project my dm's are open

Can we submit a FOIA request to get all submissions to the mayor through TLS or we can't since it's a private entity?

The biggest challenge I believe in developing such a system is how to verify residency with being polluted from outsiders, I'm thinking maybe of doing something like chain migration.

Firstly, in NJ it's not called FOIA, but OPRA. Secondly, I think you can ask for all correspondence to the mayor's official email address regarding a specific topic during a specific time frame. I think the mayor uses his official email address, so it may turn up the results you seek.

Or is it time to think about a different system of govenance?
Lakewood is large enough to transition to a ward system...

I'm not that familiar with Lakewood...  :P

But this should be able to be at least brought to the ballot via a citizen petition.

1000%.
Most of the issues with the local government are because we are still using a system that is designed for a small sleepy chicken farm town. In fact, from the 30 largest municipalities in NJ, only two are still using the township committee system. And Lakewood is the 5th largest municipality in NJ. It is a recipe for disaster. In a city of our size, with diverse interests and needs, the only way to properly represent all the voters is with a ward system.

More specifically, what Lakewood needs is the Faulkner Act mayor-council system with the council members elected by ward. This would provide for much more accountability, with a specific person, who lives in the neighborhood, accountable for his ward. It would also help in other ways. For example, lets assume a hypothetical scenario where there might be a large college or similar type institution, with thousands of students who live in their dorms or perhaps rent apartments in a specific area of town. They might not be home owners who deal with high property taxes, many of them might not be dealing with the insane traffic problems that those living in more distant areas have to deal with all day. That hypothetical area, with a very large number of voters would currently have the ability to dilute the votes of all the rest of the voters. In a mayor-council system with the council elected by wards, they would all vote for their council member but the rest of the town will not lose their voice.

Are those students local voters?
