Ipad? Tab? Something Else?
« on: February 08, 2012, 08:43:34 PM »
For awhile now I've been entertaining the thought of buying an Ipad but besides for it being "cute" I'm not sure how effective it is.
I know that Apple phones are pretty limited compared to, say, android smartphones (my brother had the iphone for a month after having the Evo for 2 years and today he switched back to android never to look back...), wondering if the same is the case with the ipad.
I'm looking for the full internet browsing and messaging experience, multi-tasking to the max, almost like a laptop without the need of document processing.. I don't need it too be as much fun as I need it to be effective and, ah yes, speed is of the essence..
I also hear that Android ICS will be compatible with ALL apps out there, which can be a big plus on that side.
There are also Android-Windows compatible tablets out there?

What would YOU recommend and WHY?

I might hold out for a Windows Tablet.

Oy Vey! Holding out for too many things already!
Do you know if/when the Windows one is coming out? Who's manufacturing it?

I just got a Kindle Fire and rooted it to allow most android apps to work on it. Pretty powerful device with a dual core processor....

And I agree, android kicks apple! :)

I have an ipod touch, an android phone and an android tablet and I like android muuch better!

What OS does it come with? It wouldn't beat the Tab, would it?

It comes with Android but it's heavily restricted by Amazon. You can only access the Amazon Android app store and not Google's Android Market. A quick root and andstalling Go Launcher and I have myself a regular Android tablet!!

The Kindle lacks GPS, microphone or camera.

Then again, it only costs $200!!

If you want an Android tablet with those things you can get the Tab or similar for $370+

I like the Fire because it can do 98% of what the Tab and Ipad can do and it's ridiculously cheap.
Basically, Amazon loses money every time they sell one in the hopes that you will go on to buy content (Apps/movies/music) from them. So you definitely get the best bang for your buck. Assuming it's really worth $300, basically the decision is if you want to pay $400-500 for a Ipad or Tab, or get a $300 valued Kindle Fire for $200 and just miss out on a few features.

If you are a heavy camera/gps user it's obviously not for you.

How does the processor (speed) compare to the Tab?
Remember, I'm ready to pay at least the amount an ipad would cost.. Not looking to throw money in the garbage, but will definitely pay for a noticeably better experience.

what about Blackberry? currently same price point as kindle, with Camera, etc.
limited OS though, especially until 2.0 comes out any day. remains to be seen how many Devs take advantage of the Android Runtime option.

Really?
Not sure what you have against it, but it has got excellent reviews,I got one myself and its great. Especially the new transformer prime that is the is the only tablet out now that has a quad core processor. It has android ics, and Asus is better than all the other brands in terms of upgrading the os. You can also get the accompanying keyboard that really will make it not all that different than a laptop.

I have nothing against it. I actually know that Asus are among the best laptop manufacturers out there. Was just wondering if the feel is a tablet feel or is it a laptop without keyboard feel.
Also, how thin is it? And will it get Android ICS?
