Vitamin Brands
« on: January 26, 2025, 12:03:24 PM »
My dietitian recommended I start taking some vitamins/supplements, but strongly suggested that I only use companies that are "3rd party tested."

Do any kosher companies fall under this category?

What's the bar for 3rd party tested? How are you supposed to know?
That they have some logo on the bottle from a good testing lab? That they are listed on a labs site?

I'm still learning about all this, but I think once a company has a third party lab testing it that's another whole level of...reputability? Is that a word?

And I don't see on any of the major kosher brands that they have that. So either they don't, or I'm just not checking the right spot on their websites...though it seems like something they'd advertise on the front page, if they did it.

I give my kids kosher multivitamin gummies. I wouldn't be shocked if they're just regular Paskez gummy bears that are repackaged lol

The fda does go after these companies once in a while. I would be somewhat confident that it is labeled correctly.

Labeled correctly, yes - but the full effective content, maybe. Also, maybe there's a different in different forms/quality/effectiveness/absorbency?

Maybe these?

https://www.gardenoflife.com/our-certifications

https://countrylifevitamins.com/pages/our-pledge

I don't think so - I find it fascinating that some of them have dozens of certifications, but none of them are actually testing the potency of the actual vitamins. See this (not saying I trust CVS):

I dont know what you mean by potency. AFAIK all vitamins need to be made in fda approved facility.

Safety vs potency.
A supplement capsule can be 101% safe and useless

Exactly - they've got certifications saying they:

Non-GMO
Where food comes from Organic
USDA Organic
Certified Gluten-Free by NSF (the same body that also does potency testing, but they're not certified for that)
Carbonfree - they're carbon-nuetral
Alaska Responsible Fisheries Management Certification
Certified Vegan
OU-kosher
IGEN Non-GMO Tested
NSF certified to ensure quality and safety, such as testing for mercury and heavy metals
Certified B organization (ESG)
Regenerative Organic Certified®
Upcycled Certified™ for sustainability practices

Now maybe the 2nd NSF certification actually includes potency, but I'm skeptical, because they'd say so explicitly if it was.

then it would be mislabeled . You can’t say 10mg vitamin c and only have 8

that is a separate story and good luck trying to find a lab test for that.

The Law

The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) was amended in 1994 by the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (often referred to as DSHEA), which defined “dietary supplement” and set out FDA’s authority regarding such products. Under existing law:

The FDA does NOT have the authority to approve dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness, or to approve their labeling, before the supplements are sold to the public.
Under the FD&C Act, it is the responsibility of dietary supplement companies to ensure their products meet the safety standards for dietary supplements and are not otherwise in violation of the law.
Dietary supplement labels are required to have nutrition information in the form of a Supplement Facts label that includes the serving size, the number of servings per container, a listing of all dietary ingredients in the product, and the amount per serving of those ingredients. They also must have a statement on the front of the product identifying it as a “dietary supplement” or similar descriptive term (e.g., “herbal supplement” or “calcium supplement”).

In general, even if a product is labeled as a dietary supplement, a product intended to treat, prevent, cure, or alleviate the symptoms of a disease is a drug, and subject to all requirements that apply to drugs.

I think the OP will be much better served by directing the question towards an employee at a Jewish pharmacy. Many of them are very knowledgeable about vitamins, and some pharmacies even have a vitamin specialist who really knows the distinctions between the brands.

For example, Refuah Pharmacy in Lakewood has an employee named Isaac who is a tremendous expert. (IINM, there is even a dedicated option on their phone system to reach Isaac.)

Try Nutri Supreme - iinm, depending on the supplement, they use trademarked ingredients and compounds which may have 3rd party testing themselves.

Thanks - will try to follow up on some of these suggestions. I really am amused and flabbergasted at just how many certifications a vitamin can have while avoiding what would seem to be the most important one.
