although you are right, it has been common practice for ElAl to have a segregated section offers for those who want it. This has been an attraction for some and to have thrown them off may not have been a great business practice. This is evident from the care they are taking in their statements.

Segregated section for religious reasons seems like a good idea. If you know ahead of time you are not going to be in this section then you should not fly if you are adamant about not sitting next to a women.

Thwe way I ubderstood the article was that they thought they were in such a section but there was some goof that they ended up not there.

I don't even get it. If you are flying with your family, htere should be some way to arrange it so you aren't next to a woman. I suppose unless there are only two of you and you are in the middle of the 5 section. In which case, I guess you really do need to convince a person next to you to switch.  But how did that happen to "hundreds of people" on the same flight?

my guess is they were all men and were objecting to the character of the whole section and not just the actual seat next to them.

Can this be different flights. From what I hear this happens all the time.

What she writes about having been in yeshiva for 13 years belies her article. The typical woman from similar circles as this man would be just as interested in not sitting next to him as he was in not sitting next to her, although she may be more timid about it.
