I don't think it has anything to do with timing, it's not like she was trying to sell computers to the flintstones. Her marketing was obviously not good enough, once other companies got a crack at it they were able to make it to go viral.

Unlikely. Noone can pinpoint exactly the sudden surge. Like most fads, it's a matter of random luck.
