So before I start screaming "Anti-Semitism!," is there any other plausible explanation for the lack of any mention of Israel in this article?

Why mention Israel? After all the writer is a Christian Arab, who is pointing out the problems (and some oppression) of Christians is majority Muslim countries (to him "The Middle East" is the Arab/Muslim ME, Israel is foreign to that group, in a way that might be similar to how Malta is foreign to other Arabic speaking nations). Where does Israel fall into there? He gives extra weight in his article to Lebanon, as he's a Lebanese American and understands the challenges that exist there very well. That is probably the main focus and concern of his article, with all the rest just padding around it.

Quote
Lebanon, the last safe home to Christians in the Middle East, has generously welcomed a great number of Syrians fleeing their country's civil war. A nation of 4 million people is hosting an estimated 2 million refugees and displaced people, the highest per-capita home to refugees in the world. This population increase has presented legitimate challenges to Lebanon’s infrastructure, economy and education system. After seven years of conflict in Syria, with no end in sight, more children are born in Lebanon to displaced people and refugees than to Lebanese citizens.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Israel is a notable exception as a country in the Middle East where Arab Christians can thrive, perhaps even more so than in Lebanon, and also happens to be the actual place Christianity began. That is very relevant to the article and no doubt the author is well aware.  He just went out of his way to avoid portraying Israel in a positive light.

I disagree.

From the first few paragraphs of his article:

Quote
....We will recall that they then fled to Egypt as political refugees.

Two thousand years later, the Christian communities of the Middle East — descendants of the first Christians — persevere in their faith in Christ. They live in an era of violence, unrest and persecution. Many have been forced to flee their homes and many more their countries.

That is the topic of his article. A polity where there hasn't been any persecution of Christians in the region, nor is there a threat of such, is simply not part of the discussion.

You should also remember that he's an Arab, and looking at it from Arab perspective. He might feel that Arabs are class 2 citizens in Israel (I'm not commenting on whether that is true or not), but that has nothing to do with Christianity.

There's enough real antisemitism in our backyard, let's not look for it where it might not be there.

I will let all you decide the anti-Semitism part.

To me it is very simple. Is Israel part of the middle east?

CM Special:

But it really depends who you ask. How do you define the "Middle East"? What are the boundaries?

According to https://en.aegeanair.com/milesandbonus/how-to-spend/regionsmapping/?_id=64556D149BF845C8A4737906E33A8D9A&_z=z it isn't. (And same applies to FlyingBlue, though they ditched award charts, and previously many other programs had Israel as part of Europe).

Assuming that the Middle East refers to a geographic area on Earth, it is very hard to say that Egypt and Lebanon are part of it and that Israel is not.

Compare that article with
https://www.timesofmalta.com/mobile/articles/view/20161221/opinion/Cradle-of-Christianity.634470

This writer is talking about very similar topics and actually does mention Israel, but his mention is in the context of making things harder for Christians in Muslim ruled states, as the Jews were no longer a significant minority in those states.
