It's probably not PC to say, but no way Manning gets his sentence commuted if he's not transgender
...but accurate!

The president should be responsible to use it only in extenuating circumstances (think Nixon)
So a president breaking the law is OK?

The real question is how Obama can justify it. He obviously can't use your "mentally ill" reason, and if he points to the whistleblowing he takes away any his ability to complain about the DNC hack.

I believe Mannings attorney has argued that he's mentally ill, not sure what's so PC about mentioning it.
Saw NPR say the same.

The question is why despite his campaigning on transparency, and failing to deliver any of that during his 8 years,
Considering he has been one of the most transparent and corruption free president we have had your question is loaded.

So send him to a mental hospital then when he is OK he can serve the rest of his sentence.

I disagree, but let's leave it at the fact that I give Obama credit for promoting transparency now.

Why serve (more) time if he was suffering from a mental disorder at the time he committed the crime?

That is a very dangerous road to go down. Every mass murderer and their brother will be claiming mental illness at the time of their crime.

Obviously they will, and they already do claim that.
Though it's worth mentioning- Manning is no mass murderer, he had good intentions, and also provided importantinformation that the public had a right to know. So yeah he leaked other sensitive info (but not THAT sensitive) and he got slapped with an almost unprecedented long sentence. He served a nice amount of time, would cause no physical harm to anyone if let loose, and suffers from mental illness.

Be a human and let him free.

Its not just a court matter.
It's a matter of national policy.

If you want to continue allowing the illegal activities that gov agencies and officials are involved in, then you prosecute whistleblowers to the fullest extent. If you want to encourage more whistleblowers to uncover injustice, then you don't punish previous whistleblowers (who have provided great benefit to US citizens) to the fullest extent of the law. As I quoted articles earlier, many times it is impossible for a whistleblower to share important information about illegal activities without breaking the law or fear from retaliation.

It's Obamas right and job to follow the national policy that he kept promising to Americans. A court can't weigh the net benefits of the whistleblowing vs the crimes committed. They can only say, you committed XYZ and therefore deserve 35 years.

The whistleblower defense is 100% bs! If his intentions were to uncover wrongdoing, he would have released only those records that were relevant to the wrongdoing. He would have sent it directly to a reporter, not to wikileaks. Releasing the names of American assets in foreign countries, and putting their lives at risk is not whistleblowing.

He downloaded as much data as he could, and the evidence of wrongdoing happened to be part of it. The whistleblowing was secondary to his primary goal which was to leak as much data as possible.

You are confusing whistleblowing with illegal acts. If you commit an illegal act then you get prosecuted for that act, period!!!
