As with the tweet above, that's the one that makes me doubt the whole enterprise. There's no way that many people say tennis shoes. Sneakers is way more ubiquitous, I don't care where you're from. There's no background info on the page about the data set either, just the number of people allegedly surveyed.

So here at least you can see that sneakers (45%) beats out tennis shoes (41%). But even that I have a hard time buying. Also, notice that the article states that they surveyed 350,000, while here you see there less than 11,000 respondents to this question.

Gotta remember though, the statistics cited are likely driven by things like NYSCAS, and possibly some of the graduate programs.

It's indicative of pop culture as a whole. Like with tons of celebrities (especially but not limited to athletes) with closets full of sneakers.



           

That was 3 of the first 5 I checked. The others usually just said athletic shoes or some other general catch-all.

Bottom line is, sneakers is absolutely far and away the normative term.

ETA: Plenty more that say sneakers. Have yet to find the term tennis shows or gym shoes on a site selling athletic shoes.

      

What they are calling sneakers may not be the same thing as you. Amazon has two separate categories of athletic and "fashion sneakers" which are not athletic shoes but are the old fashioned canvas sneakers and the like.

Congratulations on nitpicking the one questionable example. Bottom line is, almost every site I looked at said sneakers, and the ones that didn't used something more vague, like athletic shoes (not one of the choices in the surgery apparently). Not to mention that I've yet to find tennis shoes (unless they're actually specialized shoes for tennis) or gym shoes.

A bunch said athletic and sneakers which is the same thing as what Amazon did. A generic name is what makes the most sense when the name changes regionally.
