Please tell me you’re kidding. Do you have any idea what it means to bring a country down to its knees ? You’re probably thinking that a bunch of people just couldn’t browse the web. Try to imagine a hospital trying to cope without computers. Or the amount of business/money that’s lost (they could never repay those amounts). This isn’t white collar crime anymore. They’re holding hostages. You’re right, they shouldn’t rot in jail. Bring back the firing squads. Hopefully it would deter others

I am not kidding.  I am aware of what they did but they were clearly not trying to kill people.  They were young, foolish, and bad. They deserved to be punished and feel the weight of what they did.  You are right that they can never repay.  Therefore let's kill them?  Let them pay what they can for the rest of their lives.  Even if killing them would be a deterrent (I'm not sure it would) would killing them be justified?  How about killing all those who run red lights?

Who’s being held hostage when you run a light ? Many don’t even do it for the money, they just love the power & fame of bringing millions down to their knees.

The article makes it sound like the FBI doesn't think the Dyn attack, which fits with what you're describing, was them.

You potentially kill someone when you run a red light.

I don't disagree that what they did was reprehensible. There are just more productive ways of dealing with them than incarcerating them or killing them.  Neither of those do anything for their victims, society, or them.

They gave the codes out to everybody. Thanks to that it’s still ongoing. And they caused enough damage on their own

I see you don’t understand anywhere close the extent of the damage done. You should never know

Why should they get any years?  They should be forced to forfeit all of their illicit proceeds, work toward fixing the problem they exploited, have their wages garnished to a fund to repay for damages caused, and have restricted/monitored computer access.
Throw them in Rikers for a few years.
I just found a new supply of forks!

I would not be surprised if that part was not even illegal at all.

Very possible. But they knew what putting it out there means. Prosecuting such crimes is still newish.

It seems you don't understand my argument.  Regardless of damage done, the penalty should be productive in some way, if possible.  Harsh penalties as deterrents can be said to be productive, if they in fact deter.  But if that is the purpose of the penalty, then the extent of the damage done shouldn't be relevant, only the potential extent should.
You don't have to be so creative to think of ways their lives can be made very difficult yet still enable them in some way to partially pay back.
If they develop a way to shut down DoS attacks of the type they developed and prevent further damages, the argument can be made that they fully repaid the damage they caused.

There are exceptions, but generally, the 'weapon maker' is not the one responsible when someone else uses that weapon for a crime.

Title shows again why "news" media people are NEVER to be believed or trusted.

Yes, the title intrigued me as to how in the world is it possible for UPS to lose that kind of money. Reading the article shows a totally different culprit that ultimately made right.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

I don't think the bank made right.  Took them 10 months,  and ridicule in the media,  and they still made her sign am indemnity instead of canceling the thing.  Which means they would still let it through and would still sue her for her house.

I have no idea of its possible to cancel such a check,  but she didn't want to use it in the first place.  The back insisted she use

Amazing how they would vote to get rid of a cash cow. I can't imagine that ever happening in NYC. All they do is expand it. Bus Lanes, Red Lights, Speeding. It's just too addictive for the politicians to get this easy money.

Interesting quote out of article (emphasis added):

CLE voted it out.
I believe you've already pointed it out somewhere around DDF.

CLE isn't NYC!

In NYC one can live very well without a motor vehicle. While it has many problems, there's a vast public transportation system in place. They even leverage that for revenue by making bus lanes full of cameras cash registers.

I can't imagine a scenario that it goes away in NYC. It's just way too lucrative, easy, and disguisable as a safety issue.
