I don't get what the big deal is that the hospital itself is the debt collector. Medical debt collecting companies need to work within the framework of legal debt collection (which this company clearly does not) but that has nothing to do whether it's a spinoff from the hospital or a separate entity

Thats an unfair generalization. For me, crushing debt is only a motivator.

Unpaid debt is looked upon as an indication of character. It is also important if the position involves handling money. If the employer really wants to hire, many times the issue might be overcome with some explanation and human intervention. But unresolved debt can drop a candidate out of initial screening.

Indeed, and that's why human intervention could help. But often it's just rejected at the preliminary screening based on credit report showing delinquency, without looking at details.

Federal Govt law enforcement jobs are very keyed into this. They ask all sorts of questions based on credit report. They dont want someone subject to extortion or blackmail in a law enforcement position.

But before you dealt with your problem, didn't it trigger improper handling of funds?

Had nothing to do with why I did it. I had debt since I was very young. Didnt learn money management skills. Has nothing to do with my qualifications for a job. I believe its illegal in NY to not hire based on credit report.
