And this is why tarrifs are a terrible idea.
The US economy and US consumers are absolutely dependant on slavery (aka Chinese labor that costs virtually nothing).
These gross margins are the same in all of our imported consumer goods. Everything costs "nothing" to make.. this is a fundamental of Western markets.

Slavery (in some form) may be an integral part of human survival by design.

While in essence I agree, the tariffs are adding $2 to the price and not of real significance.

I think every product category has to be determined individually.
Many cases you have China putting a higher tariff on US goods than we put on them. I'm fine with the US matching or even raising above the Chinese tariff to show them we won't tolerate it. Otherwise they enjoy the unfair competitive advantage while US factories close.

Competitive advantage. Lol. They work for free. Compete with that?

We have labor laws and slavery was abolished. They don't.
We depend on this.

You missed the end of the article which discusses how China is not as cheap as it once was.

Anyone thinking that cheap foreign labor is a real threat to domestic labor is delusional. It's automation that's making the big difference. Jobs that took 10 or more high paid workers not so long ago, are now performed by one person and automatic machinery.

True, but the amount of items being manufactured in the far east belies that. If it were not cheaper even after the costs of importing they would not make it there.

I didn't really read the article. And yes I'm aware that China is getting more expensive. . There are other third world sweat shops taking it's place.

Indeed.

I produce and bring in a small run every year from China. It costs me a little more than $1.25 a piece after ocean freight. On occasion, I was behind schedule on production, and had to fly in the merchandise, which made it cost around $2 a piece. I've tried shopping elsewhere, domestic production would run me about $4-$5 a piece (though cutting about 3-4 weeks from lead time). I tried elsewhere around the world, anywhere where I felt a weak currency might work to my advantage (including Egypt, Turkey, Ukraine and Latin America). Nothing came close to the cost to produce in China (and IINM their factories work 24x7, and shipping routes are direct and frequent).

How many jobs would remain in the US if there would not be that cost difference?

Well, for whatever I bring from China, I would never produce it at the domestic cost. Andy while they do it using manual labor in China, It could be done by automation, but I don't know if that's used for small runs like mine.

If it could be produced competitively in the US due to automation, There are probably 4-5 human jobs involved in the production, even if nothing involved manual labor.

It is actually explaining that they don't, but that is irrelevant to whether it makes any sense to say that the article shows one thing or the other without having read it.

Why would you comment about an article when it's clear you haven't read it?
