brooklyn in 10 years from now

Brooklyn has areas where this is common (Canarsie, for example). It's often complicated to ascertain exactly who owns the building and should handle the sales, and where money should go. I believe it's also dependent on what clauses for such eventualities were included in 501c3, and what constitutes a similar oriented organization to roll over in to.

Even in heavily Orthodox populated areas like Flatbush and Boro Park, there are many shuls whose membership has died out and moved away over the years. Shuls have a bit of a limited lifespan, and reviving the congregation can be very difficult. People like a shul with a similar demographic and age group to them, with a Rav geared towards them that they can relate to.

It gets complicated when a shul which is by its charter owned by the active members has a group of outsiders that purchase membership in hopes of taking over board in "hostile takeover" election and changing shul to suit their desires. For $20k in membership, you can effectively take over a multi million dollar existing synagogue. Some of these shuls have voted to effectively close membership to new members, and lock in voting rights to existing members only.

Lol, you don't have to look forward. You can look backward at any number of places that used to be heavily Jewish in the NYC area (Harlem, Brownsville, East New York, Bronx, etc.). Or for that matter many formerly thriving Jewish communities in the most random places across America that basically disappeared completely.

I've heard that shuls have an *average* lifespan of ~30-35 years

What do you mean by this? Orthodox shuls wouldn't be sold to churches?

They don't sell to church. They sell to bank or middleman. What middleman does with it is their business, and completely unpredictable. It's as shocking as when the local non Jew backs out on completing his end of the deal in the chometz sale yet again after pesach, and has to sell it back. You'd think that after all these years, we'd learn from experience and get someone more reliable.

I don't know about 10 years, but have you ever walked down Remsen on Tahalucha?

I have. And I am aware of history. But I think the current trend is the other way around. Look at East Flatbush / Remsen Village.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

My point is that this already happened in Brooklyn, why wouldn't it happen again? The Rebbe's insistence in remaining in Crown Heights, and then keeping the Shuls that were empty and going to close open is the only thing that ensured it didn't happen to Crown Heights. The shul that ended up carrying my grandfather's name would have closed with my grandparents living right next door if not for the Rebbe telling people to daven in those shuls.

That Remsen village, east Flatbush, and Brownsville, etc. are making a comeback is only further evidence of how communities are always moving and shifting.

So for communities without the Rebbe keeping them in place, why would it be so mufrach to be closed in 10 years?

Almost certainly fake news (like most news).
the police released a statement that it never happened. They say the parents were standing close by just not in view of the camera. (I don't have a link I heard the statement being read on the news)

What is the answer to this nationwide problem?

What's the answer to cancer and heart disease? No easy fixes. For the most part (or a very large part), the homeless population are dealing with addiction or mental health issues, which make them unable to go to shelters. It's not like giving them money will solve their issues. The lack of resources are just one symptom of a larger issue. It's a tragic situation, without easy solutions.

Probably feels easier to try to help if they're homeless, because I think I can be of assistance. That's often delusional, though, if I'm not working on solving the underlying issues, which I'm usually incapable of. I'm not an oncologist, so the most I can do for the patient is to try to provide referrals and resources and financial assistance and to try to give them emotional and physical support to make their life more comfortable while they get the help they need from professionals.

You can't solve the underlying issues while they are homeless. As a society even if we don't address the underlying issues, we should at least provide them a place to stay.
