It makes no sense to deliver a letter a block away for .46 and charge that same amount to deliver it across the country.

Agreed. Thats the major reason why it makes sense to break the monopoly. Let the free market decide how much it costs to send. Because as long as they are a monopoly, their prices will continue to be regulated by the government.

We all already know how great the government is at making money.

Almost as bad as someone not knowing how to post a link.  ;)

It works fine, bub.

Apparently if you have a capital H, it appends another http to it.

I am not disagreeing but let’s remember the Postal Service is there to provide a service and unfortunately is not run as a business.

Exactly.

So this service, as long as its losing money, is effectively a tax. Personally, I don't enjoy subsidizing junk mail providers.

That’s what happened to me. Apparently if you put a capital “O” it appends it to “are” instead of “our”.  :D

I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere recently that all the junk mail is what's actually keeping the USPS afloat, it's actually profitable.

I guess spam has always been a good business to be in.

They have borrowed $15 billion from the US taxpayers so far-

"The service -- one of the few government agencies explicitly authorized by the Constitution -- has reached its $15 billion credit limit with the U.S. Treasury and has effectively run out of money, said Williams, whose job is to prevent fraud, waste and program abuse and promote USPS efficiency.

"This is the year that they borrowed so much that they can't borrow anymore," he told the newspaper."

They will probably get bailed out soon or receive additional spending limits. In my book, it's effectively a tax and will only get worse.
About the unions- you say they are a necessary evil, I halfway agree with you: They are evil.

If/when this happens then you will be correct. Let’s remember the government has stolen from USPS over the years. Use your Google skills on USPS overfunding pensions and the government keeping the money because they already spent it.
