The Pope is the religious leader off a billion+. Does he have his faults, yes. Afterall he is only human.
There is not much that shocks me, but I was completely shocked by the posts of certain members.
I do understand why there would be hate based on the RCC history. The only problem is that is not him.
There's a few points going one here. which sort of mix into one another
A. The History of the church. This affects how jews see it, and its actions now. just bec 60ish years ago they decided to change some stuff doesn't erase its history, which is very far from being a religion of peace and compassion. The Pope lecturing Jews (or anyone!) about morality and peace has the ring of the CEO of ExxonMobil lecturing Eskimoes about climate change. His org has too much bloody baggage for him to even venture into opining on such things.
B. His leadership. The death of any leader gives occasion to analyze the sum of his leadership, which in this case was decently controversial. Both with regards to internal Church teachings, and his international relations.
C. The emotional reaction of the faithful. Honestly, prob WAY less than you make it out to be. He was not pontiff for ages and ages (that people would have a emotion connection as "the only pope they've ever known"), he made controversial and divisive changes to church theology.... True, he's a darling of the left - but those are the less religious parts of society, especially in the english speaking world.
