Then switch out whoever you consider the leader of the Jewish people, and think about how you would feel about jokes made about him in the days after he died.
I'm not defending the pope, I'm advocating for the slightest bit of empathy.
There's a difference between a joke, and dancing on someones grave.
OTOH I have ZERO sympathy/empathy/etc for any death in an organization that has likely caused more pain to the Jewish people over the last two millennia than anything else in existence. It's not some random politician or sports star or even the Dahli Lahma, it's the POPE, rosh lechol davar shebetuma... The titular head of an organization that committed and promoted atrocities to Yidden over the centuries no different than what Hamas did on October 7. An org devoted truly to Shmading Jews for millennia... This is the same org that brought us Crusades, Inquisitions, innumerable Expulsions, Forced Conversions. Spare me the tears please.
What do you think the Kedoshim of York think? Or Sefarad? or the numerous Kehilos of the Reine Valley? or the ancient Kehilos of Italy? You know what the Popes did to them, when they were actually the monarchs over large swaths of Italy? Sympathy? Why?
You know the famous burning of the Talmud in Paris? Ordered by a Pope.
What exactly are we having sympathy for?

(additional rant: and this was the fellow who decided to move his org away from being a bastion of traditional morality towards the toeiva of modern society...!)
