My understanding is that only Schengen flights do not have to go through passport control.

I'm assuming that if I have checked luggage I'll need to exit security pick up luggage, go through customs, passport control, and then check back in and go through security again? Didn't think about that part..

"Passport control" in this scenario means you'll just show your passport and boarding pass to an officer before going thru connection security. takes a few seconds, I've done it in the past. If connecting Schengen <> Non-Schengen one would have to exit the airport, go upstairs and clear security again. But Non-Schengen > Non-Schengen just goes thru connection security with a quick docs check and you're at the departure gates

In some cases (especially with EK/A3) they'll be able to send the bags all the way, simply show your onward booking to the check-in agent and ask

This is confirmed EK will check bags through if ongoing flight is A3. They codeshare on these flights. The problem is when tickets are separate and connection is missed, you are expected to collect your bags in ATH.

LY also checked bags through onto JFK on EK.

EK at EWR checked in for A3. IDK whether they will do the same for LY.

LY at TLV checked in for EK. This might indicate that EK could do the same.

I know someone who got asked right away what their final destination is at EWR emirates check-in and offered to check thru, he connected to A3 but it seems like they're willing to help

Flew this sukkos and they sent my bags through on LY. but i also did it before that and they didn’t,
Seems like if the agent knows then you’re good.
Regarding checking in to LY the desk only opens 3 hours or so before flight i went early and it was issrair… plus you'll have to go to desk i think for the extra security questions and to get your boarding pass. Otherwise If you have it on your phone (idk if LY has)and no luggage they will stop you by boarding for security questions…

I've done the ATH connection from and to LY many times in the past few months
If the LY portion is on the same ticket you're lucky
From TLV my bags always connected to the next airline, no issues
However to TLV, you should tell LY security in ATH that you have a connecting bag and show them the tag. The sooner the better to allow them to process it and allow it on the flight.

If the LY portion is a separate ticket, that may depend on the competency of the check in agent for you first flight. Sometimes its even best to walk away and try with a different agent. They can manually add the LY flight, but not always....
EK can, but sometimes don't.... (I had to try 3 agents in HKG 2 weeks ago)

amex is considered a revenue ticket even if you use MR to cover the charges
