Ive gotten upgraded to suite with the regular "plus" level

my friend called and asked to be upgraded to gold and was upgraded so i did the same... and the rep is like "why should i upgrade you exactly?" LOL

I know if you spend 30K a year on the starwood card, you get gold status, or it retains your gold status.

my question is, who issues that gold status? is it amex or starwood?
I spent very close to the 30K on my primary card but well over the 30k if you combine my spending from all my starwood cards (2 personals and 1 business).

Do you think they would give me another year of gold if i explained that to them? If so, would you recommend calling amex or starwood?
I got my gold from "just asking" for it in the first place...i dont think they would do that again if i did it once already:)

I'd rather not tell them i have an amex platinum if i dont really have one. I'd much rather explain to either starwood or amex how i spent the 30k during 2009 on 2 diff personal starwood cards...just not sure if i should try this with amex or by calling starwood directly...

Try both, I think I'd start with Starwood as they give out Gold like candy.  For example you don't even need to tell them you have an AMEX Plat, just a code from AMEX for Gold.

So it worked! I called SPG and explained that i spent over the 30K between all my SPG cards and she notated my account to give me gold again. She told me to call back after Feb 28th and tell them to check the notes in my account.

Something ive noticed is that spg statuses seem to always expire at the end of february. (i could be wrong about that) So if you call in march 2010 and are given gold status it will get you 1 year and 11 months worth. The reason is that if they only gave you until Feb 2011 that would only be 11 months. So they give you until Feb 2012 in order to make sure you get a complete year.
Hopefully because im reminding them in March to reissue the gold, they will give it to me until Feb 2012

now with the upgrades, do i need to reserve directly through them or if with priceline, hotwire, or hotels.com or some other 3rd party "travel agency" they will upgrade as well?
