Altitude Sickness
« on: May 07, 2025, 03:10:44 PM »
I'm looking to book a trip to either Santa Fe or Breckenridge in the summer.  I'm a bit concerned about altitude sickness.  And all my online research doesn't leave me feeling good about heading to either of those places. But I realize that most people writing are the ones who have had bad experiences.  I've read up about all the things to do to prevent getting sick but I guess I'm wondering how often people suffer and if its worth taking a 4 day trip to somewhere with high altitude.

Friend of mine had to leave Vail after a day or two. ER Dr. said if she was staying a week or more he would work on it, but recommended going home if it was just a couple of days. It seems wise to stay in a lower altitude to adjust for a day or two.

I've gone to many high elevation places with long hikes (12 miles) with no problems (including an infant and a 8 year old under her own steam). I'm not saying you should copy me I'm just saying there are those that are fine.

I would read up on symptoms so you can recognize it and plan accordingly.

@Something Fishy do you have any good links to info on this?

I think places like Santa Fe most would be fine. Breckenridge might be a little harder, depends how sensitive you are to it. Three places come to mind that were harder on me, but after a few days you do used to it, Cusco, Peru, La Paz, Bolivia, and Quito, Ecuador.

It really depends on the person. I went to Vail with a group and everyone else had no issue at all, but I ended up leaving early  after not breathing well and being terribly weak and uncomfortable for a few days
