What a waste of money. Let it go to people who it may light a spark under. All the Frum people end up going regardless
You don't spend a dime for the trip. All the expenses are paid. Dinner, Shabbos, hotel, flight, etc. What do you mean?

Think he's saying its wasted on the frum people. That the money should go to those who otherwise wouldn't.

I agree.  How does Birthright raise the money to pay for this? I assume its from charitable donations, so if you apply and go on this trip you are in essence accepting charity.

I've never had a real tour of Israel and would've loved to have had one.
Alas every time I was either not accepted or the timing didn't work out and now I'm 27.

That's like saying if you accept a scholarship from day school or college you are accepting charity.

Exactly, accepting financial aid from a jewish school is accepting tzedakah.  Scholarships that are started for the purposes of rewarding good grades or something else are not charity.

It all hinges on how birthright raises their money and under what pretenses, which I stated in my first comment.

Quote from their website:

Taglit-Birthright Israel is a partnership between the Government of Israel, Jewish communities around the world (through the Jewish Federations of North America, the Jewish Agency for Israel and Keren Hayesod) and some 25,000 individual supporters in North America and around the world.

Think he's saying its wasted on the frum people. That the money should go to those who otherwise wouldn't.

What I'm saying is that although its not their intention, Birthright has been  the vehicle for thousands of people discovering Yiddishkeit and moving on via programs with Chabad, Shabbat Experience and Birthright NEXT so every frum person who goes is one less person that can go and be inspired. Thats besides for the Hasbara opportunities on College campuses

I think marital status doesn't affect the application. But if you want to be considered, use a referral code, it's gives it priority.
Here's my referral code: YELADIM-NAF

I believe you can check out the NCSY group, of the OU department, since it's modern orthodox, and mixed, but I'm not sure if you're comfortable with that. When they give you a choice of which group to choose, they also give you an explanation and sample itinerary for each group.
