Help! Amex won't refund my $450 annual fee

My $450 annual fee was charged on 2/15. I called to cancel 2/14, and they told me no, as it's already 61 days. I told them that I thought I had two months, and they told me tough luck. Do I have any options? Are there any reps that will let me cancel it for the refund even though I'm now 2 days past their deadline of 60 days?

Your a 3rd year law student -- and u gave up!!

recall if can not get a full refund , try a supervisor -- worse case - prorate

You got me! I would never give up myself. I need the money to pay those loans...

However, it's not really me, it's my wife, and she doesn't like making these phone calls. I therefore need to tell her the exact wording to use on the phone call, as she'll probably only give it one more try before just making me pay.

She has no other Amex cards. The rep told her they can't pro-rate it, and the only option is for her to go through the application process for a new card, and transfer the balance or something, and then pro-rate it. Rep also said most cards don't qualify for this. Don't know if this is true.

A. Have her give permission for you to talk to them and claim extenuating circumstances or being misinformed on the time frame, or etc.
B. Apply for a new card for her.
C. Downgrade to a cheaper card like Zync.

if you downgrade to the cheapest possible card, they will give you back the prorated amount for the year, minus the fee on the new card

i went from the plat charge card to the one that costs $25 per year, and i got it credited back
as soon as i use that credit up, i will cancel

you don't need to use up the credit, you can call and ask for a check

Thanks guys. I did the whole process myself a few weeks ago, and got a check. So does my wife actually need to open another card, or is there a possibility that someone will have pity on us as we missed the deadline by a day, and will allow us to simply get the refund?

I'm not 100% sure even if you had been w/in the 60 days they would have given you the $450 refund without another AmEx.

and with another AmEx, you can:

--Get full refund up until 60 days.
--After 60 days, you can 1) the above first two options, and 2) get the fee prorated.

Click on "Dispute/Inquire about account activity" under your recent activity on the card in question.
