-If you plan on using public transportation, get an Oyster card. They are much cheaper and easier to use than conventional travel cards, and never expire. They can be bought in many stores in London, or online. These days one can use contactless credit cards instead of Oyster.(Check here to see if your foreign contactless card will work.)

-Here is a handy planner for the public transport system.

-DD's Kosher Sandwiches can be bought in most major airports and stations and at some supermarkets around London.  Check here for a list of locations.

-Kosher in the West End/City -
Selfridges food hall has a variety of kosher groceries and prepackaged ready food by 1701.
Hermolis  also have a deli counter there.  The range includes schnitzels, spring rolls, kebabs, breaded lamb chops, chicken wings, fish products and salads. Traditional Shabbat dishes will be on sale on Thursdays and Fridays. Supervision is provided by the Kashrut Division London Beth Din
In the City Munch'n'Crunch have a stand in Hatton Garden with kosher meals, sandwiches, sushi and coffee. It is located at 32 Hatton Garden, on the lower-ground floor of Jewellery Emporium. There is also Mincha there at 1:30.

-Kosher food at non-kosher hotels, restaurants etc. can be ordered from the following kosher caterers in London. They provide double-wrapped meals to any location and could also match the menu of your location.

-Minyan in the West End could be found at the Marble Arch Synagogue. Shacharis during the week is followed by breakfast, and a kiddush on Shabbos.

-Most food products in general stores do not have a hechsher on them. This does not necessarily mean they are not kosher. For example, Coca-Cola does not have a hechsher, but it is kosher. Here is an online kosher product search that could help. Link to Android app.

Thinking about booking TLV-LGW (EasyJet...landing midnight) and then LHR-ORD (United, leaving 8am the next day).  2 adults, 2 little kids.  I think my best bet is to stay near LHR so that we don't need to sit in traffic in the AM to the airport.

Can someone recommend (a) best & cheapest way to get from LGW to LHR hotel at midnight with kids and luggage, and (b) hotels that are easiest to go hotel-to-LHR?  Ideally Hyatt or Marriott.

Thanks!

I believe there's a bus that goes direct from LGW to LHR, but your routing is a real shlep & with two little kids I wouldn't recommend it unless you have no other choice

There is a bus but it isn't cheap and wont be frequent at that time of night. I would just take a minicab, should be around 75 pounds for the 4 of you .
But I would agree 100% that this is NOT a good routing. You and the kids will be exhausted. If possible take the BA or LY flights to LHR - or even a flight direct from LGW to US (eg Norwegian)

Does anyone know how transfers on the underground work? If I wanted to change trains (using an Oyster card), can I leave the station for a couple minutes or would that make me have to pay again?

If you leave the station you would have to pay again.
(Is there any subway system in the world that wouldn't make you pay again if you leave the station?)

I was asking because this site seems to imply that if you tap in and change your mind you have 2 minutes to exit without being charged. I didn't know if it applied to a transfer as well. Look in the "Same Station Exits" section.

Yes, there are lots of major things not to miss. Read through the wiki and the thread for great ideas and then ask some specific questions you may still have.

I'm gonna be in London for just a quick stop this summer before moving onto 1 week in Paris and 1 week in Rome. Only 1 full day in London't as an extended stop over.

I was thinking a tour of Buckingham palace and the tower of London would be the main activities for the day. However when I proposed this to a coworker she said to skip the Buckingham palace tour since I will be visiting Versailles on the trip and go to the British museum instead. Either way, this trip will have a plethora of museums and palaces. Thoughts on Buckingham palace? Or a better 1 day itinerary?

We did the inside of Buckingham palace tour and thought it was pretty cool-not a tremendous amount to see though as they do not let you into any of the functioning parts of the palace (like the living qaurters, throne room, etc)-it was just really cool to have been inside Buckingham palace-I would not do it though if I only had 1 day in London.
Perhaps consider the changing of the guard tour (in the wiki) and then the tower of London to see crown jewels...
