-If you plan on using public transportation, get an Oyster card. They are much cheaper and easier to use than conventional travel cards, and never expire. They can be bought in many stores in London, or online. These days one can use contactless credit cards instead of Oyster.(Check here to see if your foreign contactless card will work.)

-Here is a handy planner for the public transport system.

-DD's Kosher Sandwiches can be bought in most major airports and stations and at some supermarkets around London.  Check here for a list of locations.

-Kosher in the West End/City -
Selfridges food hall has a variety of kosher groceries and prepackaged ready food by 1701.
Hermolis  also have a deli counter there.  The range includes schnitzels, spring rolls, kebabs, breaded lamb chops, chicken wings, fish products and salads. Traditional Shabbat dishes will be on sale on Thursdays and Fridays. Supervision is provided by the Kashrut Division London Beth Din
In the City Munch'n'Crunch have a stand in Hatton Garden with kosher meals, sandwiches, sushi and coffee. It is located at 32 Hatton Garden, on the lower-ground floor of Jewellery Emporium. There is also Mincha there at 1:30.

-Kosher food at non-kosher hotels, restaurants etc. can be ordered from the following kosher caterers in London. They provide double-wrapped meals to any location and could also match the menu of your location.

-Minyan in the West End could be found at the Marble Arch Synagogue. Shacharis during the week is followed by breakfast, and a kiddush on Shabbos.

-Most food products in general stores do not have a hechsher on them. This does not necessarily mean they are not kosher. For example, Coca-Cola does not have a hechsher, but it is kosher. Here is an online kosher product search that could help. Link to Android app.

No, yes but you’ll need a Oyster card. Get one from a friend. Top up ( add money)

Check the weather you might need a umbrella

any recommendations for friends? don't know anyone living there

You can get a oyster card by the arrivals in Heathrow.  Just make sure to return it before you leave and they will refund the 5£ deposit and anything left on the card.

Just bear in mind you need to factor in at least an hour for the tube ride from LHR to central London (and back) - and more if you decide to go up to GG for food.

So option one probably only leaves you with about 4-5 hours to play with.

I'd say to skip Reubens and just get DD sandwiches. Liked it better and just a couple of euro.

You can also get food from the Kosher section in Selfridges Food Hall.

You can although the kosher section is a lot smaller than it used to be and I find a bit unreliable. They no longer have the Adafina open counter, now it's pre-packaged sandwiches and meals from a far smaller corner spot.

The suggestion about DD's sandwiches is a lot better. If you're in the Selfridges area they sell them in the John Lewis food hall further down Oxford Street or in the Waitrose on Marylebone High Street (close to Reubens) - any many other places in Central London (look on the website)

You can get DD sandwiches at more locations, but the selection varies by location and time of day.

The food hall has options other than sandwiches and a place to sit down.

All in all, they are both good options.

DD's are cheaper and close in Sainsbury's at Marble Arch. They have the 3 pound meal deal, which includes smoked salmon bagel/chicken goujon wrap + drink + snack for 3 pounds

12 hour layover in London. What to do?
« Reply #1919 on: January 16, 2018, 10:08:20 PM »
Hi, my husband and I arrive in London next Monday at 8 am and have a 12 hour layover before continuing on to Israel.  Assuming we aren't totally wiped out by the time we get there, do you all have any suggestions as to whether it pays to venture out? Has anyone done whirlwind tours of this kind? If so, what do you suggest we  see/do in that brief interlude?  Are there any kosher meals available for purchase at Heathrow if we elect to stay and wait? All the best and thanks in advance for your suggestions.
