Things are more expensive than that. At least they were in 2003...
I remember the meal for me and my wife total coming to about 70 pounds!!!! (for deli takeout!)

BTW there is a changing of the guard tour that my wife and I did in London and it was really a fun way to see it. It's led by a very energetic and interesting fellow named Matt and he basically takes on a walking tour starting from where the guards get ready then you march alongside them to where they switch, etc.... You get to see alot more than standing in front squished with loads of people. And it was pretty cheap (for London standards at least). Here is a link to his website:
http://www.funlondontours.com/london-walking-tours/changing-the-guard

As far as Reubens-true it was really expensive but it was right in line with everything else in London-I got the pastrami burger and it was really delicious.
That sounds really interesting. Too bad I didn't know of that then.

I only found it because the more research I did abt the changing of the guard the more I heard everyone complain about coming early, squishing with thousands of people and barely getting to see anything-with this guy, not only did he give us a short walking/history tour first but then he started where the guards line up to march to the palace, then you "march" literally alongside them until they get near the palace, then you run over to where the mounted guards come out from, and then you end up at a great view point to watch the whole changing ceremony/inspection in the courtyard. The last thing is, he takes you quickly after that to the changing of the sentries at St James Palace (those 2 guards that everyone takes pics with) which almost noone gets to see...really a great experience and it makes something that everyone says is so boring really enjoyable!!

Didn't know the name of St James Palace - but we did get to see that (by accident)! I don't get how this guy gets you a good view point for the ceremony? It seems like you show up to the ceremony exactly as it starts - does he have a section reserved?

Sounds like a nice tour, but £15/person seems a bit steep, no?

no reserved section-he has been doing this for 10 or 15 years and he knows exactly where the least ppl stand at the right times-you are not right in front of the gates -you are a bit further back but up on a hill so you have a great view-will post pics of the tour later so you can see what I mean

I dont know how to do that yet- here is the link if you or anyone else who does know wants to add it

When I did it 2 years ago it was only 10 pounds but it must have gained popularity since then, hence the rise in price-IMHO it was money well spent (a really enjoyable/entertaining 2 1/2 hours)

I took him in the summer he was really good.
I tried booking for 2 online but there was availability only for 1 and I didn't have another day to go,so I called him up and he let me come along with wife.
BTW 15 pounds is not all,I saw everyone tipping him in the end.(they were giving notes, in UK the smallest note is 5 pound).

If you go with a family you could get away cheap and give a fiver for everyone.
I have heard from many that they don't know where to stand and they don't get to see anything, with him I knew where to stand and when to move on,I got to see a lot.

Maybe if someone will be kind and take a map and show exactly where to go ,what time and write up a few lines to know what's gong on could save everyone a lot of money,it's not that difficult.
It could be all shown on the map, first he goes to the old palace,no one knows about that so it was EMPTY we stood the first row and saw a lot.

I don't know how to do these things.

As promised :D: (i still owe DDF a detailed tr on this trip (2 summers ago) -it included Rhodes (GR), Budapest, London, Amsterdam (inc. overnight cruise from London to Amsterdam aboard the Stella Line), and Prague!!

Matt:the tour guide

First you have a small walking/history tour of the Buckingham area,

Then you start the Changing of the Guard tour here (right across the street from this):

Then you line up at the curb and wait for them to come near you:

Then you march alongside them (literally) all the way down the palace esplanade:

After that, you wait outside some other location (I dont rem. all the names) and watch the other set of guards come marching out towards the palace (he explains in great detail what each group represents and what type of soldiers they are and how to identify them, etc.-basically tons of info you would never get w/o something like this (or reading up online before :P)):

Then you watch them come marching out:

and right by you once again:

Then you run over to the spot where you watch the ceremony in the courtyard take place: (Of course you are not standing right in front of the courtyard but he says that whatever goes on in the courtyard is just an inspection and is rather boring-the main part is what happens all along outside the gates):

Finally, you walk back to St James palace (through some small back allies) to watch the changing of the sentries:
(and take the obligatory picture w/ them and try to make them laugh of course ;D)

All in all amazing experience-I really hope to get around to a full tr one day (I gave my asia trip precedence even though this was the summer before....)

Nice pics! So, the small changing of the guards I saw was literally a 1 minute walk from Buckingham and it didn't look like the pics you have of St James, so it must be yet another changing. Anyway, your pics show that you clearly got an awesome experience out of the whole thing. Sure seems worth the money if someone doesn't plan to be there super early.
