Why is there no Chabad in Iceland?
« on: February 18, 2012, 06:53:01 PM »
Sounds to me like a job for an enterprising DDF'r.
I thought Chabad's goal was to have a shalich in every location. Iceland is a pretty big omission. I heard on the forums shilchus posts are scarce and much in want. So why not Iceland?

I spent some time there and from what I saw there's not enough Yidden to justify a full fledged Chabad, merits more of a fly in for the holidays type deal which is what some shluchim already do now.  Read here: http://www.haaretz.com/weekend/week-s-end/iceland-jews-are-left-out-in-the-cold-1.403142

Just read that (before you posted)
So the purpose of chabad houses is for local Jews?

wouldn't know if I'd go as far to say only for local Jews but Iceland's not exactly the tourist paradise that say a town like Cancun is where there would be enough Jews coming through to sustain a Beit Chabad.

+1
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Not enough local Jews, not many tourists and out of whack zmanim. There are 5 hour days in the winter and 20+ hour days in the summer...

Just FYI, I know (of) several Chabad guys that have been to Iceland to visit the Jews there. Just because there isn't someone full time and/or for the tourists doesn't mean they are ignored.
