US Air vs Air Canada

I am looking at flights for next year and have this dilemma- I am Gold on United and want to keep that status. I have a choice of booking a long flight on US Air (which will be moving to One World next month) or Air Canada (still in Star Alliance). We called USAIR and they said any flight booked until December 31 if you give your United FF number would accrue to United.

Does this sound right? I need to accrue to United. What does the group think is a safer bet for me?? Thanks.

Thanks. Booked next Pesach direct UA from EWR to TLV, return Air Canada to YYZ, then UA affiliate YYZ to EWR. About 17000 EQM, $260 cheaper than UA direct.
