Best Non-American Express CC for gas purchases
« on: June 12, 2008, 09:45:41 AM »
Can someone please tell me which is the best non-American Express credit card to use for gas purchases, preferably cash back, as alot of gas stations do not except AE.

The Chase BP Visa gives 5% cash back at BP stations, 2% cash back on all travel and dining, and 1% on everything else.
For the first 60 days that you have the card all rewards are doubled (10%/4%/2%)
There's no annual fee.

BTW which gas stations don't take AMEX, here in Cleveland I have yet to find a single one that doesn't!

Small name gas stations, or off brand.

I know that there are cc that give a full 5% on gas to any gas station, I want to be able to get the 5% at any gas station not just bp.

I don't think anyone has a card like AMEX's Simply Cash where you get 5% cash back at every gas station.

After reading the fine print I see that there are limits and restrictions.

<Edit by dan: Sorry, no competitor links, but which card's fine print are you wondering about?>

Usually Discover's offers are limited to very low amounts, such as $100 worth of gas purchases = a maximum of a $5 rebate, etc.
Be sure to comb the fine print!

I have the Chase Perfect Card giving me 5% on gas. I think that they currently offer only 3% and 1% on other things. They also have the Freedom Card which gives 3% on the top 3 categories of your spending each month. An advantage to me of these cards is that the rebate is credited to your account automaticaly each month and I don't have to do anything.  I will note that Dan has said that he considers Starwood points to be better than 3%.

The Chase Perfect card now gives 6% off gas for 90 days, and then only 3% off.
The AMEX Simply cash is always 5% off gas and wireless, automatically credited to the account.

I was just pointing out that the Perfectcard currently offers 3% on gas, not 5% like the AMEX simply cash does.

Sorry for the bad news guys.....Just got a letter from AmEx this week. The "Simply Cash" 5% off at any gas station soon will be sweet history!!! Come July 16 it's going to be only 3% on gas purchases. The office supplies & wireless communications will continue to be 5% though.
Anyone has 5,000-10,000 gas storage tank for sale in the good Ole` CH? Otherwise, I'm going back to using Chase Hess Visa for 5% off. (First 90 Days - 10% off)!!!

Dan, as usual, you're totally correct. Even so, I am getting 5% from them. This is because I am a "five point charter member" as it used to say on my card. I got this status by being a carry over from when Shell's cobranded card was by Chase. When their contract was over, Shell switched to Citi. Chase, wanting to keep their cardholders, offered the 5% that they were given at Shell stations to be given at all brands and called it the Freedom Card. They then offered this card to the public with only a 3% rebate. It eventually changed into the Perfect Card for gas, but we who are carryovers continue to recieve 5%. It is likely that if you find another gas company whose contract is ending you will be offered the same thing in order to keep you. I have no idea how to find out when contracts end.

Wow-that's terrible news!
I wonder if AMEX will grandfather me at 5% if I give 'em a call...

I have the citi platinum dividends reward card which used to have 5% cash back on all gas purchases. When they switched it to 3% I called to cancel and they offered me a promotion to keep it at 5% for another year, no guarantees but if you have that card it might work for you too.

I have yet to find a gas station in NY that doesnt take Amex.

I have found in the past that the gas from the off brand stations is not that good as far as gas mileage compared to the name brand stations. Even though you may save a few cents a gallon, I dont think its worth it.
