Sure, but that's quite the risk to lend out your car frequently on your own insurance.
This was one of the reasons it never panned out. although the amount of stories of accidents happening on dates is not very high.
It's probably lower then the amount of times the car gets towed.
There was this and a few other issues and bh most guys got married so we just moved on

That supports my position that having the bochur drive a car to the date is an unnecessary distraction. It should be avoided IMHO (especially in NYC, or any highly urbanized area).
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Maybe this discussion should be merged with the Changing the Shidduch situation thread. Maybe it's time to stop renting cars for dates.

And I get the convenience of getting a car locally (though now that Enterprise is not too far, that should definitely be an option), but is it worth it? Besides for the hogging of on-street parking by these businesses. On-street parking should be left for non-business purposes. Cars that are used for business (commercial license plates, ambulances - except in their designated stands, taxis, rental cars, etc.) should be using dedicated paid-for parking spaces.
I think these are two (mostly) unrelated issues.

About the commercial parking, I agree somewhat. If someone has one work vehicle I can fargin him street parking, even though it hurts me. As it is they're legally not allowed to park on residential streets. But parking a whole fleet on the street is just wrong.

Regardless of the parking issue, my friends and I were seriously contemplating opening a car gemach where locals lend out their cars for the evening for daters to save the heavy needles expense of renting.
What's the problem you were trying to solve?

Do a significant portion of bochurim not have family or friends they can borrow from?
Are guys just too embarrassed to ask?

Regardless, it sounds like a good idea in theory but I feel like you'd probably have a hard time finding enough people willing to lend out their cars to strangers...

    A few points:
Using a car service/uber can end up being more expensive.

He actually got himself a lot on empire, although many cars are still parked on street.

Maybe some entrepreneurial individual can take over some of Car2Go's fleet and set up shop close to various Yeshivos (office, not parking).

Buggy moved a decent bit of their fleet onto getaround, and the rates are fair, just the license check fee is a bit of an expensive first time fee, and depends how much you want to minimize your deductible (if their insurance is bichlal primary) makes it less cheap

    Probably this.

I think it's more common than you think.

I thought I heard something like that recently.
    Thanks for the update.
I couldn't understand how that lot was cost effective, that real estate must be quite expensive.

How about when someone works for an ambulance company and parks the ambulance overnight on the street?

How about when a Taxi/Uber/Lyft car is parked on a residential street?

How about when (gasp) a Mitzvah Tank is parked on a residential street?

How about when a Taxi/Uber/Lyft car is parked on a residential street?
I have no problem with that. (Although Taxi is probably somewhat of a gray area.)

How about when someone works for an ambulance company and parks the ambulance overnight on the street?
Is that really a thing? The ambulance company doesn't need their ambulances at night?

It seems to me that what you're basically saying with those two examples is that if someone drives to work and back every day and just parks the car while at work only then they should be allowed to park on the street at night, but if the vehicle is used for work, not just the commute then they can't park.

Personally I think it's more about how much space is being used than about what the registration on the vehicle is.

And I say all this despite parking on my block having become utterly impossible recently and being a major major headache for me.

Regarding ambulance, there are some young guys that work as EMTs (or maybe even Parameds) for commercial ambulance companies, and I've seen them park an ambulance overnight on my block (where they live with parents or grandparents).

NYC law forbids overnight parking of commercial vehicles on residential streets. There's logic behind that. If a vehicle is used for business purposes (rather than just commuting to work) part of the cost of doing business would be paying for a place to park it overnight. Residents should have space on their street available to them.

As for your block, I don't know how that compares to my block, which seems to be a favorite for Kabakov cars (for obvious reasons).

I notice you didn't touch on the third rail I dared mention.

Regardless, it sounds like a good idea in theory but I feel like you'd probably have a hard time finding enough people willing to lend out their cars to strangers...
Most bochrim (at least my friends) didn't have who to ask and ended up renting most of the time. It was really starting to add up and it would take a whole day of headspace being hopefull the car would be there (or need to leave work early to go pick up a car from a more reputable rental place).
The idea of the gemach really started when a friend who wasn't really interested in a second date refused to go out again even though she really wanted to simply because it was very expensive and he felt it was a waste of money as well as a headache dealing with renting and parking etc.
He agreed that if money wasn't an issue he would be willing to go on a second date (although he still felt it was a waste of time and headache) .
So from there we started thinking of ways to alleviate these problems.

The idea was getting some people who have cars with garages who usually don't need their car during the evening hours lend out their cars for bochrim to date.

At the end we all just moved on in life and unfortunately it never panned out. Although I still think (once logistics are worked out) it's a great idea for a gemach and would really help bochrim in this regard.

How about when someone works for an ambulance company and parks the ambulance overnight on the street?

How about when a Taxi/Uber/Lyft car is parked on a residential street?

How about when (gasp) a Mitzvah Tank is parked on a residential street?
You don't have to go through your whole blocks occupations

Lol, if you told her that chances are she'd say he's right and he's not for me. (Although for other reasons).
On the flip side when a guy goes to the girls home city to date she usually is allot more involved in these things.
