I wasn’t aware it was his. One of the best values/experiences on the CH food scene.

Food is good, but expensive. Service was also pretty bad the one time I dined in.

It is a notch above Pizza-shop quality, served in a restaurant at restaurant prices. Does not compare IMO with food quality at Basil.

The pizza at Basil is better, but what about pastas, appetizers, fish and sides?

The Pasta tasted like boxed Pasta at Mozz, versus fresh homemade Pasta at Basil. Admittedly I have not been to Mozz in a couple years, so this may have improved.

Had no idea who owned it.

Interesting you say that, because I’ve been many times in different settings and always appreciated the consistently good experience (food quality, portion sizes/value, service, and ambiance - in that order)
    i belive it's owned by a cohen
    not kabakov

Kabakov most definitely is a partner.

I can't definitively say there's no Cohen involved, but I don't remember hearing the name in this regard.

Passing by Kingston between Union and Eastern Parkway today I noticed more cars than usual parked. It was only some of the "tanks" that regularly hog the spots that were absent, it was Ess & Bentch's fine avoidance "outdoor dining" shelter that was gone! What happened?

Maybe their permit for it lapsed (or never existed)? Or it started to fall apart and wasn’t worth the investment to put back?

    Permit?

I thought these are almost mandated by the city (and put up by establishments to avoid being fined for not enforcing indoor vaccine mandates - never seemed to have served any other purpose).

No idea. Not all establishments have them. They eat up valuable parking spots so I’d assume you need a permit.

Since when does the city care about valuable parking spaces. They've been eliminating so many of those right, left and center. And these outdoor dining huts are another city initiative that makes parking harder.

Legal street parking has been canceled.
